Prince William Left 'Sickened' By Racist Trolling Of England Players After Euro 2020 Final

Prince William has condemned the outpouring of racial abuse that Black players of the England football team have faced in the wake of the Euro 2020 final.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka faced an onslaught of racism on social media after they missed their penalties in a tense shoot-out against Italy, seeing their rivals take the coveted cup.

Now, the Duke of Cambridge has spoken out against the vicious trolling on the official Twitter account he shares with his wife, Kate Middleton.

"I am sickened by the racist abuse aimed at England players after last night's match," he wrote. "It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour.

"It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable."

William had attended the match with Kate and his eldest son, Prince George.

The third-in-line to the throne the latest in many high-powered political figures to condemn the behaviour of some England fans after the team lost at Wembley in the final.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote on his official Twitter page: "This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media. Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves."

Elsewhere, Home Secretary Priti Patel added: "I am disgusted that @England players who have given so much for our country this summer have been subject to vile racist abuse on social media. It has no place in our country and I back the police to hold those responsible accountable."

However, the senior politicians both faced accusations of hypocrisy, when earlier this year they defended fans who booed the England team for 'taking the knee' - a gesture the sportsmen took part in to show they supported equality and wanted to fight racist abuse both in sport and society.

The Football Association said of the racist language: "The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of the England players on social media.

"We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in supporting the team. We will do all that we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible."
