Harry reveals difficult conversations with Meghan over major Archie and Lilibet concerns

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share seven-year-old son, Prince Archie, and daughter Princess Lilibet, four

There's one conversation that Prince Harry is dreading having with his two children.

Making an appearance on the Hasan Minhaj Doesn't Know podcast this week (29 Oct), the British royal opened up about some of his biggest concerns for his youngsters, one of which hinged upon advances in technology.

For those in need of a reminder, 41-year-old Harry shares a son, Prince Archie, seven, and a daughter, Princess Lilibet, four, with wife Meghan Markle.

The former was born in the UK whilst the couple still served as working royals - positions they surrendered in 2020, citing mistreatment from several senior members of the monarchy.

By the time Lilibet was born, Harry and the former Suits actress had moved to Meghan's home country, setting up shop in Montecito, California, where they've remained ever since.

Unfortunately for Harry, however, no matter how far around the world he and his other-half move, the pair won't be able to escape one aspect of parenting that many modern-day mums and dads dread more than anything else - the 'mobile phone conversation'.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very protective of their children's identities, often hiding their faces whenever they share a picture on social media.

Asked about this by podcast host Minhaj this week, the Prince revealed that he and Meghan, 44, have sometimes struggled to see eye to eye, despite how young their children still are.

"I don't know if you guys have hit this crossroads yet, but what are you going to do when your kids ask for a cell phone?" the presenter asked. "Are you going to give them a phone? Have you talked to Meghan about this, cause I've talked to my wife about this."

In response, Harry admitted: "We talk about it a lot. I think that because of what we know now, we will be way more cautious and hesitant of allowing our kids to have access to social media."

"But the problem is, so many parents don't have that awareness."

The father-of-two added: "Because in no logical, fair, ethical, moral world, should a parent have to consider this app, that sits on the phone, which by the way, having a phone for your kid is a really important thing.

"But the moment that you give them the gateway to everything else, kids will be kids."

Reflecting on his own situation, Minhaj then responded: "What are you guys going to do when you hit that 8, 9, 10 place? I don't know what to do because I feel like I'm being opted in."

Chiming in again, Harry then agreed: "You're right, a lot of parents feel as if they don't have a choice, and a lot of kids don't have a choice.

"Because the reality is, if you're talking about just having a smartphone and an old-school phone are two very different things.

"If you want to be able to contact your kid, maybe we should just be giving them the old-school phone... but I think that our goal has to be to make sure that when our children get to that age, that the situation now isn't the situation then.

"There's no reason why it should be."

He went on to explain that, despite the world 'changing', children who are disallowed to use the likes of Instagram and Snapchat often suffer ridicule from their classmates, 'because they're the only person not on the platform'.

Asked when his children will be permitted to use social media, Harry also quipped: "For me, it's 35."

He then went on to re-emphasise: "I think once your brain is properly formed. Once you are starting to learn who you are.

“Twenty-one is a sensible age, but the companies won't ever allow that. They will throw tens of millions of dollars to lobby against that.”
