In 2016 - two years before his former flame remarried a British prince - Meghan Markle's ex-husband made a startling prediction about her royal romance.

For those in need of a reminder, before marrying Prince Harry in 2018, the Suits actress had been married to American film producer and literary manager, Trevor Engelson.

The couple first started dating in 2004, when she was 23 and he was 28. Despite wedding seven years later at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios, by 2013, Meghan and Engelson had gone their separate ways, citing 'irreconcilable differences' and being granted a no-fault divorce.

In 2016, after being set up by a mutual friend, she and Prince Harry enjoyed a blind date at Soho House in central London. By their own admission, the pair immediately hit it off, and within weeks, Meghan had been flown off to Botswana to join Harry for a charity trip.

As we say, however, according to new claims, long before she and Harry had tied the knot, Engelson reportedly made a prediction about Meghan's future.

This allegation was made this week by reality TV star Bethenny Frankel during an appearance on The Toast podcast.

According to the Real Housewives of New York bombshell, she and Engelson became close around the time that rumours alleged that Meghan and Harry had secretly started dating.

"He said his ex was a woman from a show called Suits," Frankel, 55, recalled. "I didn't know what the show was. I didn't know the woman."

Apparently, months later, it emerged that then-Prince Charles' youngest son was officially off the market, having struck up a romance with a certain legal-drama star.

"Months later I see pictures showing Harry's dating someone and texted [Engelson], 'Is this your ex?'," Frankel continued. "Trevor said, 'Yup'."

After going on to ask the producer - who has since remarried wife Tracey Kurland - if he thinks Meghan is 'going to close' with Prince Harry, a reference to closing the deal (as in, marry him), Engelson is said to have replied to Frankel, 'Oh, she'll close'.

Reflecting on the text, the TV star gushed: "I don't want to get into more about that but he was like, 'She'll close'."

Asked what she replied, Frankel claimed she subsequently typed out, 'Holy s**t, your ex is going to be a princess'.

Little did Engelson and Frankel know for sure at the time, but less than two years later, mother-of-two Meghan would walk down the aisle of St George's Chapel, Windsor to exchange vows with 41-year-old Harry.

The couple are now parents to son Archie, six, and daughter Lilibet, four, and reside together in Montecito, California, having resigned from their royal responsibilities in 2020.
