Kate Middleton fans spot emotional detail in royal portrait with Prince William

All eyes were on the Princess of Wales last night, after she and husband Prince William attended a regal white-tie event hosted in honour of Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.

Ahead of the formal get-together at Windsor Castle, the future King and Queen posed together for an official portrait.

The sweet snap was later released online, with one aspect of Kate's glorious get-up going on to draw particular attention from royal spectators.

For those in need of a reminder, the high-profile event marked the first state banquet that Kate had attended since November 2023 - four months prior to her announcing she'd been diagnosed with cancer the following March. The 43-year-old subsequently underwent treatment, and revealed back in January that the disease was now in remission following a course of preventative chemotherapy.

Breaking free from her pattern of always wearing blue to mark the special occasion, the mother-of-three's outfit consisted of a dark red, silk creponne gathered evening gown.

The dress came embellished with caped back detailing, having been designed for her by Sarah Burton of Givenchy.

Kate paired her plush burgundy gown with a pair of earrings that previously belonged to Queen Elizabeth II.

She also wore the Rosette of Grand Officier l’ordre nationale du merité, the Royal Family Order of King Charles III, the Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II, the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order and the GCVO sash.

As we say, one particular element to the Princess' look has garnered mass attention - her tiara.

The glittering headpiece actually belonged to the woman that would have been her mother-in-law, had she not tragically died in a catastrophic car collision in Paris in 1997.

We are, of course, talking about Princess Diana, who was often spotted wearing a specific Lovers Knot Tiara to royal engagements alongside her then-husband, King Charles III.

The headpiece is sometimes known as the Cambridge Lover's Knot, and was originally crafted for the late Queen's grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1914 by the House of Garrard, before eventually being passed down to Elizabeth.

Made from from pearls and diamonds, Queen Elizabeth then loaned the tiara to Princess Diana as a wedding gift, when she wed her eldest son Charles in 1981. At the time, however, Diana opted to wear her family's Spencer Tiara instead, snubbing the royals.

Despite this, the Lover's Knot went on to become one of Princess Diana's favourites, and has since become one of Kate's.

Fans of the Princess noticed her paying tribute to William's mother during her latest appearance, and have since credited the look online.

"Hands down the most beautiful and elegant mother, woman in the world - Diana would be so proud of you!" one gushed on social media.

"My favorite tiara," another wrote.

A third went on: "A red dress and Diana's favourite Diana - yes!!"
