A mysterious 4-second video shared online by White House officials has raised significant alarm, as users question its true meaning.

The cryptic clip was uploaded to the Trump administration's X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram accounts on Wednesday evening (25 Mar).

The odd video was shot vertically, with the first three seconds of the screen being completely black.

Just before the video ends, however, an American flag appears very faintly. The Star-Spangled Banner seems to have had some of its colour sucked out, and looked somewhat sepia in tone.

The screen then returns to total darkness once again.

In the caption of the clip, a White House social media officer shared just two emojis - one showing an iPhone and another, a megaphone - as a hint to viewers to play the video with sound.

The only noise contained in the clip, however, is a peculiar 'ding', which occurs towards the end.

Shared at 10:00pm EST last night, the video still appears on the administration's official social media accounts.

The video marked the second shared by the White House last night, however.

The first, which was quickly deleted, was uploaded exactly 45 minutes prior (9:15pm EST).

Shot vertically, it also appeared to have been filmed using a smartphone, starting with a recording of someone's feet.

Half a second later, a female voice asked: "It’s launching soon, right?"

According to CNBC, a line of text then appeared on the initial clip that read, 'sound on'.

Shortly after it was uploaded, the first video was deleted from all accounts.

Despite the clip shared failing to provide any accompanying context, according to CBNC, both videos racked up millions of views within a matter of hours.

Social media users quickly speculated about the impact of the strange footage on US citizens.

Some suggested the White House's account had been hacked, with one asking: "Have you been hacked by Iran or North Korea? This is bizarre."

"The official White House account was probably hacked," another noted. "Something strange is happening, it looks suspicious."

A third demanded: "Has the White House account been hacked?"

Others theorised that Donald Trump may be teasing some major announcement.

"What is launching soon?" one asked with regard to the first clip.

"I feel like there's a hidden message. Can anyone read the screen?" another enquired.

A third seemed to reference the ongoing conflict in the Middle East guessing: "They boutta text us telling us were drafted."

A third group admitted they had no idea what was going on, but didn't want to stick around to find out.

"When the White House is vagueposting, I honestly don't even know anymore guys," one joked.

A second asked: "Wtf is happening man?"

"It’s past my bedtime. I don’t have time to decode this right now," teased a third.

Tyla contacted the White House for comment.
