The Kennedy family today announced the tragic passing of Tatiana Schlossberg, the 35-year-old granddaughter of former US president, JFK.

Taking to social media on Wednesday (31 Dec), it was revealed by representatives of the John F Kennedy Library Foundation that the climate change journalist had died following a diagnosis of terminal cancer.

"Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning," the simple statement penned. "She will always be in our hearts."

She and her brother, political commentator Jack Schlossberg - who is currently running for Congress in New York - were the children of designer Edwin Schlossberg, and diplomat Caroline Kennedy.

She subsequently under went a series of treatments, including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

Her health was only made public in November, however, revealing in a New Yorker essay titled, 'A Battle With My Blood', that the treatments had been unsuccessful.

Schlossberg also confirmed that she'd live less than a year as a result.

In the piece, the mother-of-two admitted in light of her prognosis: "My first thought was that my kids, whose faces live permanently on the inside of my eyelids, wouldn't remember me."

It was the notion of adding to her extended family's long-standing generational trauma, however, that Schlossberg claimed to fear the most.

Her grandfather, President Kennedy, was assassinated in 1963. 36 years later, her uncle, John F Kennedy Jr, died suddenly in a plane crash in 1999.

In her final confession, Schlossberg claimed: "For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry.

"Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family's life, and there's nothing I can do to stop it."

Lastly, she took the opportunity to condemn one of her relatives, Robert F Kennedy Jr, who currently serves as Donald Trump's Department of Health and Human Services lead.

Schlossberg claimed said been left disappointed by his recent Republican initiatives.

Tributes have since poured in for the late environmental journalist, including Caroline Kennedy's cousin Maria Shriver, who wrote that 'sweet, beloved Tatiana' 'loved her life'.

Shriver added on Instagram: "She created a beautiful life with her extraordinary husband George, and children Eddie and Josie.

"She fought like a warrior. She was valiant, strong, courageous.

"Tatiana was a great journalist, and she used her words to educate others about the earth and how to save it."
