Elon Musk has left people seriously confused after running on stage with cheese on his head during an event over the weekend.

On Sunday (30 March), the 53-year-old Tesla CEO - who is currently the richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $320 billion - stunned an audience after rocking up to a Wisconsin town hall donning the bizarre headwear accessory.

Videos from the event shows the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head signing the cheese hat before eventually tossing it to screaming fans in the crowd.

And, despite mass confusion online, there's apparently a reason behind Musk's very odd fashion choice.

During the 2,000-person rally, Musk gave out two $1 million checks to two Wisconsin voters and declared them spokespeople for his America PAC (political action committee).

According to the committee's bio on X, America PAC was 'founded by @ElonMusk to support candidates who champion Secure Borders, Sensible Spending, Safe Cities, Fair Justice System, Free Speech and Self-Protection'.

"BREAKING: Elon Musk takes the stage in Wisconsin and throws a signed Cheesehead hat into the crowd," the official America PAC wrote on X, the social media platform Musk owns, on Sunday evening, adding a cheese emoji and an American flag emoji.

"Thanks for coming! What do you think of my hat?" Musk asks the crowd, who responded in cheer.

"I am gonna sign the hat, I am gonna throw it out," he adds before tossing the hat into the audience.

After catching light of the clip online, it's clear people couldn't wait to rush to social media to share their reactions with one X user questioning: "Why does Elon have cheese on his head please?"

"Why is Elon wearing a 'cheese hat' in this video?" echoed a second while another chimed in: "Why is Elon wearing a Swiss Cheese as a hat?"

And a final X user quipped: "Anyone know why Elon is wearing a cheese hat?"

What does Elon Musk's cheese hat actually mean?

Well, in short, the reason as to why Musk opted for the cheese hat was an ode to the state's cheese industry and also its Green Bay Packers football team.

His appearance took place ahead of a Wisconsin Supreme Court election with Musk stating the importance of the judicial race, into which he has invested over $20 million.

Musk also said that the state Supreme Court’s involvement in redistricting could help Democrats gain two more US House seats, declaring: "The House majority is now razor thin.

"And if the (Wisconsin) Supreme Court is able to redraw the districts, they will gerrymander the district and deprive Wisconsin of two seats on the Republican side. Then they will try to stop all the government reforms we are getting done, for you the American people."
