Donald Trump makes two major 'protocol' mistakes during Japanese trip leaving people seriously confused

A bizarre moment from Donald Trump's Japan trip has gone viral on social media

Donald Trump has been accused of breaking 'protocol', not once but twice, during his visit to Japan this week.

The US president, 79, met with the country's newly elected prime minister, Sanae Takaichi yesterday (28 October), who took office just one week ago.

The Japan trip was the second leg of a week-long tour of Asia, and today Trump jetted off to South Korea and is expected to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping there tomorrow (30 October).

And on Sunday (26 October), he was in Malaysia to attend the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Trump went viral on social media when he disembarked Air Force One shortly after landing in Kuala Lumpur for the events of the day and broke into dance.

And, as we say, he's caused quite a stir online once again as videos have been popping up of his time in Japan.

In one clip that's done the rounds on social media, Trump seemed to wander off while being given a tour by Takaichi during a welcome ceremony in Tokyo.

As the Republican leader walked through a room filled with dignitaries, he appeared to bizarrely leave the Japanese prime minister behind and start randomly walking in another direction.

Meanwhile, other onlookers pointed out then at a different point during the event, he was haphazardly saluting at the wrong times.

One Twitter user brutally penned: "What a f**king joke. The USA is a f**king JOKE at this point. Trump is confused, saluting when he didn't need to do so, and having to be shown the right way to walk by the PM of Japan.

"Does he even know where he's at?"

Alongside the clip, a second wrote: "Trump confused, saluting when he wasn't supposed to, and had to be shown the right way to walk by the PM of Japan."

While a third chimed in with: "Trump wanders around aimlessly and oddly salutes for no apparent reason."

Someone else penned: "Clueless Trump didn't realise he was supposed to stop in front of the US & Japanese flags. Prime Minister Takaichi seemed confused that Trump kept walking, and then followed proper protocol and bowed in front of the flags."

And another social media user warned: "That wouldn't have gone down very well in Japan. He would have been advised beforehand about the protocol for this visit but he obviously forgot."

Trump, who is trying to agree a $550 billion (£415 billion) Japanese investment as part of a trade deal, reportedly paid Takaichi a compliment when they met, telling her: "That’s a very strong handshake."

In return, the world leader said Japan would give Washington DC 250 cherry trees next year to honour America’s 250th anniversary, as well as fireworks from the Akita Prefecture for July 4 celebrations.

Trump called her role as Japan’s first woman prime minister a 'big deal', adding: "Anything I can do to help Japan, we will be there. We are an ally at the strongest level."
