Andy Burnham gives first speech as UK Prime Minister but people are distracted by something else

Andy Burnham has become the UK’s new Prime Minister after Keir Starmer’s resignation.

The 56-year-old has since delivered his first speech as PM, claiming to have a decade-long plan to change the UK and hinting at cuts to personal taxes.

Speaking without the lectern used by his predecessors, Burnham said he would set out to help address the cost-of-living squeeze.

In his first promise as PM, he said he would 'end rough sleeping in our country'.

Burnham, who was met with cheers by supporters in Downing Street today (20 July), said: "I am acutely conscious that I am the sixth person in the last 10 years to walk up this street, the seventh prime minister since 2016, making this a moment for reflection and new resolution.

"It requires my generation of politicians to raise our game and rise to the new challenge.

"Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again."

However, people were seemingly distracted by something else during the momentous occasion.

"I don’t know if it’s just me, but I swear I can hear either music or people singing whilst Andy Burnham is speaking! I thought that was banned??" penned one social media user.

"That music is annoying," slammed a second, as another asked: "What's the music?"

And a fourth chimed in: "It's shouting, not music."

The Metropolitan Police previously announced that they would not allow amplifiers outside of Number 10 on Monday as Burnham made his inaugural speech as PM.

Writing on social media, the Metropolitan Police outlined: "Conditions are in place on Whitehall tomorrow (Monday, 20 July). Anyone assembling near the Downing Street gates to observe events linked to the new prime minister must not use any amplified noise equipment and must stay within the shaded area."

Previous Downing Street speeches have been disrupted by unplanned backing tracks.

Just last month, Starmer's resignation announcement made headlines after pro-EU activist Steve Bray blasted the European Union anthem 'Ode to Joy' outside the gates of Downing Street.

Elsewhere in his speech, Burnham pledged to 'make this moment a circuit breaker for Britain', with the biggest transformation in the last 40 years.

He said: "We will change politics, to make it more collaborative, more about problem solving than point-scoring, and will take power out of here and carry it into every postcode in the land, so that they can do more, and in doing more, build a new economy where we put life’s essentials back under stronger public control to make them affordable to you again, reindustrialising Britain using public procurement to back British industry."

Burnham concluded his speech, urging people to 'pull with me' to 'build a new national sense of unity, of common purpose and positivity'.
