Madeleine McCann’s university student brother Sean McCann has been tipped to compete at the next Olympic Games in 2028.

The 20-year-old swimmer and his twin sister Amelie were just two years old when their sister Maddie vanished from a holiday apartment in the Algarve during a family holiday.

Now, more than two decades later, it’s been reported by MailOnline that Sean is a high-achieving athlete and could even be competing at the LA games for Team GB.

Over the last few years, he’s impressively secured a number of wins and medals and has been swimming competitively for almost 10 years.

Sean most recently bagged a gold medal after he won a Mediterranean open-water swimming competition.

Before this, he also represented Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2023, making it all the way to the 400 and 1500m Freestyle finals.

According to his online swimming profile, the 20-year-old has also made international appearances for team Scotland in Trinidad and Tobago and at the European junior open water championships in Corfu for Great Britain.

He explained how he started the competitive sport when he was just eight years old and has remained extremely committed since.

One extract from his profile reads: “In order to have achieved this, I have had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train, since the age of 11.”

Sean also has to balance his swimming career with studying chemical engineering at Loughborough University, which is no easy feat.

He revealed that he trains nine times a week in the pool, as well as three gym sessions, totalling over 20 hours of training per week.

The student also shared his goals of competing at both the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Olympics - which looks like it could be on the cards.

Sean’s twin Amelie is equally as sporty and has competed in triathlons and cross country events, while studying at Durham University.

The news of what the twins are up to comes just after more searches kicked off for their sister Madeleine, two decades after her disappearance.

For those that aren’t up to speed, Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007 after her parents Kate and Gerry McCann left her sleeping alongside the younger twins in their accommodation in Praia da Luz.

Last week, German and Portuguese police scoured over 20 plots of land east of Praia da Luz - between the Ocean Club holiday resort and the cottage where prime suspect Christian Bruckner lived.

But, the latest round of search efforts have now concluded as planned, reports ITV news.
