A social media influencer has died after falling into the crater of an active volcano.
Juliana Marins had been visiting Mount Rinjani, in Lombok, Indonesia when she made the decision to join a hiking group on Saturday (21 June).
She's been solo travelling around Southeast Asia in the weeks prior, already having visited Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines - destinations she'd documented on Instagram.
After losing her footing during her mountain hike, however, the 26-year-old Brazilian star slipped and fell down a 1,968 foot slope at around 6.30am.
Marins survived the drop and was able to sit and crawl across the volcanic trail, as per drone footage circulating online.
Her sister, Marianna, previously claimed on local television station Fantástico that her hiking group went on without her after Marins asked to slow down and rest.
The tourist had slipped into a crater (Getty Stock Image) "She didn’t know where to go," the sister explained. "She didn’t know what to do.
"When the guide came back because he saw that she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there."
Rescue teams were immediately dispatched after Marins began screaming for help, yet the next day, no trace of the publicist and pole dancer could be found when they descended 984 feet to look for her due to the extreme terrain and foggy weather.
It later emerged that Marins had fallen further down the crater, into what rescuers described as a 'deep gorge with loose rocks'. There, she'd spent almost four days without food and water.
Eventually, the tourist was found by rescuers who had established a dedicated tent on Monday. At the time of her discovery, however, she was motionless.
Marins' family later confirmed that she'd tragically passed away, with authorities claiming she died of her injuries.
In an Instagram post shared on Tuesday, they wrote: "The rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was.
Her family has since confirmed her passing (Instagram/@ajulianamarins) "With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive.
"We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection and support we have received."
In Marins' own final post delivered on 11 July, she shared some snaps of her travels through Indonesia with the caption: "Never try, never fly."
Brazil's former minister Tereza Cristina has since paid tribute to the online star, writing on X (formerly Twitter): "The entire Brazil cheered and prayed that the rescue would arrive in time to save the young woman from Niterói, Juliana Marins, alive.
"Unfortunately, they could not save her. Very sad. Our condolences to her family and friends.
"And may the Brazilian government, through Itamaraty, demand an investigation of the facts and the punishment of those responsible in Indonesia. In practice, Juliana was left behind twice: on the dangerous trail and after she fell off the cliff."
