Following the discovery of human remains in the area of Tenerife where missing teenager Jay Slater disappeared, Lancashire Police have issued a statement.

Earlier today, the Spanish Civil Guard told Sky News: "The Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group of the Civil Guard has located the lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of constant search.

"All indications indicate that it could be the young British man who has been missing since last June 17 in the absence of full identification.

"The first investigations reveal that he could have suffered an accident/fall in the inaccessible area where he was found."

In the minutes following the announcement, Lancashire Police have issued an update on the case.

"We have today (Monday, July 15) been notified by the Guardia Civil that they have found the body of a man and that the indications are that this is Jay Slater," the latest statement read.

"While at this stage no formal identification has been carried out our thoughts are very much with Jay’s family at this time, and we continue to offer them our support."

The Oswaldtwistle-born teenager was reported missing on 16 June following a night out with friends to the Spanish island's NRG music festival, after which he didn't return home.

One of the friends he was holiday with, named Lucy, later told press after reporting Slater missing that he'd ended up in an apartment in the 'middle of nowhere', with his phone dying after hitting 1% battery.

Since then, a colossal search of the mountainous regions began but was sadly concluded after just over two weeks, with police have recovered no leads.

Lucy told the Manchester Evening News: "He's gone on a night out, he's gone to a friend's house, someone that he has met on holiday.

"One of the people he has met has hired a car out of here, so he's driven them back to his apartment and Jay has gone there not realising how far away it is.

"He's ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there.

"But then in the morning he's set off walking, using his Maps on his phone and ended up in the middle of mountains with nothing around.

"He rang me at about 8 o'clock [in the] morning saying his phone was on one percent, he said "I don't know where I am, I need a drink and my phone is about to die"."
