The only survivor of the fatal mushroom lunch that killed three people has spoken out, after the woman who made the meal received a life sentence today (8 September).

Justice Christopher Beale sentenced 50-year-old Erin Patterson to life in prison with a non-parole period of 33 years for murdering three of her estranged husband’s relatives with death cap mushrooms.

For those who need a reminder of her horrific crimes, in July 2023 Patterson invited her estranged husband, Simon Patterson, and several members of his family, over to her home for a meal.

Although Simon didn't show up as he felt ‘too uncomfortable’ given recent tensions between them, his parents, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, were in attendance, as well Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66, and her husband, Reverend Ian Wilkinson, 71.

All of the attendees were served up a lunch of beef Wellington, which was laced with foraged death cap mushrooms, meaning they fell ill and were admitted to hospital.

Don, Gail and Heather all tragically died from mushroom poisoning, while Ian, the sole survivor, was discharged after weeks in an induced coma, fighting for his life.

During the sentencing, Justice Beale told the Victoria state Supreme Court that Patterson’s crimes involved an 'enormous betrayal of trust'.

He said: "Your victims were all your relatives by marriage. More than that, they had all been good to you and your children over many years, as you acknowledged in your testimony.

“Not only did you cut short three lives and cause lasting damage to Ian Wilkinson’s health, thereby devastating extended Patterson and Wilkinson families, you inflicted untold suffering on your own children, whom you robbed of their beloved grandparents."

Speaking to reporters outside the court, as reported by NPR, Ian didn't directly address the sentence but thanked those who'd helped him during the difficult time.

He said: "We're thankful that when things go wrong, there are good people and services and systems available to help us recover."

Ian added: "Our lives and the life of our community depends on the kindness of others. I'd like to encourage everybody to be kind to each other.

"Finally, I want to say thank you to the many people from across Australia and around the world who through their prayers and messages of support have encouraged us."

And it's not the first time the pastor has spoken out, as he previously made his thoughts clear at Patterson's pre-sentencing hearing.

As reported by the BBC, he said his late wife was 'compassionate, intelligent, brave, witty - simply a beautiful person who loved sharing life with others'.

Ian added that Heather had a 'great sense of humour and it was a joy to be in her company' and that he 'only feels half alive without her'.

He explained: "I’m suddenly single, [experiencing] the heartbreak of having to wind up her affairs, return to pastoral work without her sage advice."

A deeply religious man, Ian said his only 'consolation' was that they would be 'reunited in the resurrection and the age to come'.

He told the court: "She loved our children and believed her greatest work was to raise them to be good people.

"The trauma they experienced… has left deep wounds. I’m deeply grieved by their ongoing pain."
