Rita Ora has apologised for throwing a 30th birthday party, which took place this weekend despite the lockdown in England.

The singer took to Instagram to post a statement about her actions, explaining she was "deeply sorry".

Rita posted the apology on Instagram (

She wrote: "Hello all, I attended a small gathering with some friends to celebrate my 30th birthday. It was a spur of the moment decision made with the misguided view that we were coming out of lockdown and this would be OK.

"I'm deeply sorry for breaking the rules and in turn understand that this puts people at risk. This was a serious and inexcusable error of judgement.

"Given the restrictions, I realise how irresponsible these actions were and I take full responsibility.

"I feel particularly embarrassed knowing first hand how hard people have worked to combat this terrible illness and being fully aware of the sacrifices that businesses and people have made to keep us all safe.

"Even though this won't make it right, I want to sincerely apologise."

Rita didn't address how many people were at the gathering and has volunteered to pay a fine of £10,000 for breaching the rules.

The national lockdown, which is still in place until 2nd December, bans social gatherings and the mixing of households.

According to the rules, people should stay at home and avoid meeting those they do not live with.

Added to that, hospitality venues such as cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars and social clubs have been forced to close (except for takeaway and delivery). Breaches of theses rules can result in hefty fines.

Followers are horrified at the singer's actions, especially considering so many events - such as weddings - have been cancelled during lockdown.

One person called Rita's actions "disgustingly inexcusable" while others deemed it "selfish and irresponsible".

Meanwhile, Number 10 has also spoken out about celebrities breaking the rules of lockdown. Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesperson said: "It's important that everybody in society sets an example by following the rules - that is for every member of the public including celebrities."

Tyla has reached out to Rita's reps for comment.
