Kate Garraway has given an update on her husband Derek Draper is doing as he continues to fight complications caused by coronavirus.

The TV host, 53, revealed that the former Labour adviser opened his eyes on May 4th, right before her birthday.

"That was an amazing day. I thought, 'Here we go, this is it. The start of his recovery'," she told The Sun.

"But then he closed them. Although he still opens them periodically, there's no sense of whether he's actually seeing anything."

Derek was admitted in March and placed in a coma at the beginning of April, despite Kate's initial resistance.

Unfortunately, despite beating Covid-19, Derek now has a hole in his heart, needs dialysis in his kidneys and has become diabetic due to damage in his pancreas.

In her interview, Kate also recalls a painful conversation she had with one of Derek's consultants, in which she was first braced with the idea he could be in a coma forever.

"There was a terrible phone call two weeks ago from a senior doctor in the intensive care unit," she said.

"[He told me] I think I have to give you a second worst case scenario, which is that he never changes from this. That he is locked in this for ever".

When Kate got off the phone, she claims she threw up on the spot, and entered a "second level of loss", faced with the prospect she "may lose him even if we don't lose him".

However, despite the doctor's warning, she and her family are still trying hoping he will recover.

Kate revealed that she and the kids Facetime him every day in the hope he can hear their voices and it will bring him a sense of normality.

She added that her son Billy, 10, had even made a den on Derek's side of the bed, and had been sleeping there in his absence.

We've got everything crossed for Kate and her family. This must be an agonising time for them all.
