There aren't many ways to make "how tall are you?" a less awkward question for both parties but Apple may have the answer.

It's that time of year when Apple's new iPhone models arrive with all the latest tech. Users of the brand new iPhone 12 Pro will notice the models features an interesting new feature which may unintentionally put an end to guys lying - or shall we say, embellishing their heights on Tinder and other dating apps.

The new iPhone 12 pro features a LiDAR Scanner for enhanced augmented reality experiences. The sensor also has a unique feature - it can measure a person's height instantly using the Measure app. The sensor is so accurate it can even measure a person's height if they are sitting down.

When using the Measure app, it detects a person in the viewfinder and automatically measures their app from the ground to the top of their head. All you have to do is position the iPhone so that the person you want to measure is on screen from head to toe. A line will appear at the top of the person's head with their height measurement in either feet and inches or in centimeters - there's no getting around it.

Just in case your date claims they grew or shrunk overnight, the circular shutter button in the bottom-right corner allows you to take a photo of the person with their height measurement. This might spark a new trend amongst profiles in addition to holiday snaps, selfies from inappropriate landmarks and of course, standing next to their cars.

Perhaps Apple took inspiration for a height scanner from Tinder's April Fools Day joke from last year. The popular dating app released a prank announcement suggesting they were updating the app to feature a height verification option for men in order to bring "the honesty back to dating" and end "height-fishing".

At the time men were, of course, outraged by the suggestion of height verification becoming a "thing" and rushed to Twitter to air their frustrations. One user said: "Cool with this. Just add a weight verification as well for the ladies who love to show old pics!"

A statement from Tinder read: "It's come to our attention that most of you 5'10ers out there are actually 5'6. The charade must stop. This type of dishonestly doesn't just hurt your matches - it hurts us, too.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the average height for a man in the UK is 5ft 9in and the same for men in the US according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This feature is limited to devices with a LiDAR Scanner, including 2020 iPad Pro models and the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro Max.
