A mum has come under fire for celebrating her daughter’s first birthday with a rather unconventional spread.

TikToker @dani_fitmom took to the platform in October to announce that her child would not be marking her first milestone moment with a birthday cake.

Instead, she opted to pop some candles in a tomahawk steak and a buttered lobster tail. A wild or genius move?

In the caption of the video, posted to the pregnant creator’s 81,500 followers, she wrote: “It’s our family tradition - surf ‘n’ turf platter to celebrate! Both my kids prefer steak over sweets so this is how we do it.”

The controversial clip has since garnered 6.5 million views, and over 5,000 comments have been posted regarding the cake-less birthday party.

One TikTok user wrote: “This is great inspo' for my daughter’s 1st birthday in January! She’s a Golden Retriever.”

Another commented: “This actually looks fire but cake is a childhood birthday staple and it can’t be replaced.”

Dani unveiled the birthday surprise on TikTok last month.

“This is hilarious but honestly I love steak and I would definitely replace it with my birthday cake if it wasn’t considered weird,” said a third.

A fourth said: “I actually love this but I would still give her a cupcake afterwards, lol.”

Since going viral, 31-year-old Dani has returned to the platform to give viewers some context on her daughter’s protein platter. She has also provided an insight into why she decided to switch out the traditional pudding.

“So for all you haters asking why I can’t just do a normal birthday cake for my daughter’s first birthday… I don’t owe anybody an explanation.

The mum explained her decision to serve meat over cake in a separate video.

“It’s because most birthday cakes and cookies are filled with the nasty artificial dyes, most of which are banned in Europe and still very widely used in the US.”

Dani also claimed that these dyes can cause ‘behaviour and learning issues’ and queried why she would give them to her daughter.

She also said that ‘fancy’ cookies and cakes are expensive and that the local companies she allegedly contacted didn’t offer her any healthier alternatives.

“I could make my own - I’m not really into that - but if my daughter ever asks for a cake of course I would make her her own healthy cake.

“But at one year old, she’s not asking for cake. She loves steak, it was enjoyable for her.”

She added that until her child physically asked her for a sweet dessert, she didn’t see a ‘problem’ in continuing their ‘amazing family tradition’.

The content creator’s reasonings have been supported in the comments section, with one viewer writing: “There is absolutely nothing wrong with a steak cake. I would prefer that too.

“It’s your child, you are doing amazing mama.”

Another commented: “My daughter didn’t even touch her cake that I made with clean ingredients for her 1st. She just ate all the fruit off of it.”

A third wrote: “Your baby is so lucky to have parents like you. That Tomahawk bone was her jam! And no one could tell her any different. she loved every minute of it.”
