You or your significant other may be experiencing a ‘shrinking’ penis because of bad habits, according to health experts.

According to previously published data, the average flaccid penis length in the United Kingdom was 3.6 inches (9.16cm), while the mean erect length came in at 5.2 inches (13.24cm).

Unfortunately, concerns about the size of one’s manhood can be a significant source of anxiety, with only 55 percent of people with penises claiming they were satisfied with its size, as per a study published in the British Journal of Urology International.

If you’re someone who is worried about how big their schlong is, then you may be interested to know that one key lifestyle choice could be harming its size even further.

Penis shrinkage, known medically as penile atrophy, is usually caused by ageing, health conditions such as high blood pressure or clogged blood vessels, and apparently daily habits, as per some health experts.

Here are three reasons why your penis may have shrunk or appear to be shorter than usual, alongside how you can reverse the effects of one of them.

Prostate surgery

Transurethral resection of the prostate, known commonly as TURP, is an operation to reduce the size of your prostate gland.

Medical experts will usually advise you go under the knife if your prostate has grown too large and is causing problems when you pee.

Surgery may also be necessary if you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, as per Cancer Research UK.

Men who have this medical treatment are likley to experience a temporary shortening of the penis.

Research suggests that the average penis may decrease by 1cm, though length often improves over time as erectile function returns.

Curved penis

Manhood comes in all shapes and sizes, but if yours is curved, you may have what is known as ‘Peyronie’s disease’.

The condition causes your painfully curve when it’s erect and, in many cases, erectile dysfunction, as per the NHS.

According to Dr Malik, a urologist and pelvic surgeon, people with Peyronie’s disease may experience reduced length and thickness. It may also make intercourse painful.

“You will notice it, because you'll see a noticeable lump on your penis, or see that it is bending or curving in a different way,” the medical expert explained.

Fat can ‘bury’ your penis

Dr Malik previously said that weight gain, especially around the lower abdomen, can make it seem as if your penis has suddenly gotten shorter.

“The number one reason why people think that their penis is shrinking when it's actually not, is because they've gained some weight,” the expert stated via YouTube.

If you’ve noticed that your fat pad has buried your penis, then losing some weight via exercise and eating in a calorie deficit may be beneficial.

How to prevent penis shrinkage

According to Dr Akady Lipnitsky, a NYC-based Chiropractor who specialises in chiropractic massage therapy, pelvic floor exercises are crucial when it comes to reducing the changes of penis shortening.

He also recommends maintaining a healthy lifestyle and drinking less alcohol.

"And of course, start exercising, besides the cardiovascular and strength training exercise, it's important to incorporate a pelvic floor exercise into your daily routine.”
