Woman’s Espresso Martini goes viral for all the wrong reasons as people question if it’s even real

The sad-looking Espresso Martini in question turned out to be part of a collaboration between Chili's and Vanderpump Rules cast members

More often than not - and always when I'm out with the gals - an Espresso Martini is my cocktail of choice.

Being the cocktail menu staple that it is - it's probably hard to get it devastatingly wrong - right?

Well, one woman's experience proves otherwise.

Personally, there's just something about the espresso and coffee liqueur mix that gets me every time. The vodka too, obviously.

The foam, and the two or three coffee beans decoratively placed on top - it's just a dream.

That dream became somebody's nightmare and has since gone viral in an unprecedented manner.

The name of the woman at the centre of the espresso martini-gate is Em, who hails from the United States.

She shared the simple sentence to X, formerly Twitter: "i got an espresso martini at Chilis yesterday.."

Her post has been viewed over 11million times since 4 May.

I know you're all dying to see what the monstrosity looked like. So here it is:

For those not in the know, Chili's is an American casual dining chain that specialises in steaks, burgers, fajitas and party platters.

They also sell a wide range of cocktails as well as 'to-go alcohol'.

In another unpredictable twist, Em went on to reveal that her Espresso Martini (can we even call it that anymore?) was part of a special collaboration between Chili's and reality TV series Vanderpump Rules cast members, Scheana Shay and Katie Maloney.

Little Black Book reported on 23 April: "Chili’s has partnered with fan-favourite reality stars, Scheana Shay and Katie Maloney, who know a thing or two about tequila and Espresso Martinis."

They continued: "Chili’s Espresso Martini, made with Lunazul Reposado Tequila, Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Monin Agave Nectar, Owen’s Espresso Martini Mix and garnished with coffee beans."

Em's comments have been blowing up with people laughing at the sad looking drink.

One person wrote: "When I get the job after lying on my resume."

A second person added: "I cannot believe that is even real omg."

A third person chimed: "Knew i was right to be suspicious of how hard they’ve been pushing these."

For those interested in how to make one correctly - if only to get that wretched image out of your mind, BBC Good Food have provided the following fool-proof recipe.

Espresso Martini recipe

  • Start by making the sugar syrup. Put the caster sugar in a small pan over a medium heat and pour in 50ml water. Stir, and bring to the boil.
  • Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool. Put 2 martini glasses in the fridge to chill.
  • Once the sugar syrup is cold, pour 1 tbsp into a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice, the vodka, espresso and coffee liqueur. Shake until the outside of the cocktail shaker feels icy cold.
  • Strain into the chilled glasses. Garnish each one with coffee beans if you like.

Cheers!
