People baffled after finding out correct way to say broccoli

Brocco, what?

People have been left wondering if they've spent their whole lives pronouncing broccoli incorrectly, after a TikTok video went viral.

Mum Kate Young - aka @katelynn.youngg - from Australia, had been recording a video about online shopping when she started discussing the size of her broccoli florets.

But people were way more concerned with how she was pronouncing the leafy green veg.

Asking her followers who worked in supermarkets about how produce is packed for online orders, Kate said: "If you pick the items for the online orders, I just have a question - are you, like, not allowed to give us the good produce?

"Because I never get good stuff, and today I bought some broccoli and you pay for broccoli per head, not per kilo.

“I usually get a massive big head of broccoli when I buy it myself, so I’m just curious do you personally pick this produce, and, it’s just like not very good, or I was told you’re not allowed to give us good stuff?"

But people were shook when Kate pronounced broccoli as bro-kuh-lie rather than bro-kuh-lee.

Other TikTokers were pretty savage in their responses, with one person commenting: "It’s because you’re pronouncing it broccol-eye."

While another said: "BROCK O LAI…. What just happened."

And a third added: "Another day being grateful that I don’t live in Queensland bc otherwise I might say 'broccolie'."

Many thought it was a joke, with another writing: "Are you pronouncing broccoli like that as a joke? "Genuinely curious."

And a fifth said: “I can’t with the broccoli pronunciation."

It seems that Kate had always thought she was pronouncing the word correctly, explaining she had never known any different.

"I’m not sure if it’s a common thing," she said, before adding: "I literally don’t know how else to say it... Why has no one told me this before?"

Others came to Kate's defence to say that her pronunciation was 'an Australia thing'.

“Literally everyone (Australian) I know pronounces it this way. I only ever hear Broco-LEE as an American pronunciation,” they wrote.

Meanwhile, some people were left wondering if they had been pronouncing broccoli incorrectly their whole lives.

"Me thinking I've been saying it wrong then I read the comments," one wrote.

It seems the more commonly used 'bro-kuh-lee' is the way to pronounce the leafy green.

According to produce expert Thanh Truong, Kate's version has been 'phased out'.

"Broccoli-eye has definitely been phased out. I haven't heard anyone in the industry including many broccoli growers in Victoria call it broccoli," he told the MailOnline.

"It seems like before the internet age people said it both ways but brocco-'Lee' has definitely taken over, especially from an industry point of view."

That settles that, then!
