A mum has surprised parents online with a stark warning about choosing swimming costumes for their children.

Known as @springhill.isr on TikTok, Nikki Scarnati regularly shares swimming and parenting tips with her 12,100 followers on the platform.

But her latest warning has garnered a huge reaction online, with many weighing in on the debate.

During a 43-second PSA, Nikki addressed parents who take their children swimming to give them the very important message.

Mum Nikki explained why she avoids some bathing suits for her daughter.

Apparently, it's all to do with which colours you pick.

"Don't buy blue bathing suits,” she warned.

Nikki then films as her daughter swims in a pool while wearing a light blue swimming costume with pink details around the frilled neck portion.

The mum urged parents to skip buying blue shades and choose brighter shades like red, pink and purple for a very important reason.

“This is why you do not put your children in blue bathing suits,” she shared.

“Look how difficult it is to see her under the water, and this is in calm water.

“This is not with a whole bunch of other kids playing and splashing around and having a good time.

“Even in the sunlight. Look how difficult it is to see her with that bathing suit on because it’s the same colour as our environment.

“So do not buy blue bathing suits, guys.”

Nikki captioned the video: “Just don’t do it! Just buy bright ones!!”

Lots of social media users agreed with Nikki's advice.

The TikToker’s advice garnered a mixed reaction on social media, with some viewers claiming they could see the little girl clearly whereas others said they also avoid blue bathing suits.

One commenter said: “I can clearly see her. I also won’t let my daughter go in or near the water without me.”

However Nikki replied: “But can she save herself if she did? That’s MY point. Bathing suit isn’t the only solution. But it’s one of them…”

Another social media user wrote: “I’m a former lifeguard and this is absolutely right! Any shade of blue is difficult to see, and so is any pastel light colour in general.”

Other parents agreed with the advice and some were shocked they hadn’t realised before seeing Nikki’s video. “That’s crazy I would have never even thought about it wow,” another shocked mum wrote.

One parent said: “only bright orange and pink for us.”

Someone else penned: “My kids will forever wear neon everything so I can clearly spot them no matter where they are.”

While one woman wrote: “I’m not a mom but I save these for when I am.”
