A wax specialist has revealed must-know answers to all of the questions we find ourselves asking when it comes to getting an intimate wax - including some of the 'weirdest' things she's experienced on the job.

Jess Normanton, 'your hairy fairy godmother' is the 29-year-old founder of The Brazilian Wax Company.

The waxer is based in Halifax and has amassed over 90,000 followers on TikTok, where she regularly shares stigma-busting videos including totally 'normal' things to experience if you have a vagina, how best to deal with pesky ingrown hairs, and how it's totally acceptable to go for a wax if you suffer from genital herpes.

In an exclusive chat with Tyla, Jess also opened up about what it's really like to work as a professional waxer.

Because let's face it, it's an amazing job that we're grateful people have - but we're not so sure we'd be able to do it ourselves.

When asked what led her to start her very own waxing business, Jess said she started her company aged just 27.

She said: "I wanted to do [waxing] as I knew that I could help so many women as so many of them have body insecurities and worries.

"I wanted to create a friendly environment that every woman could feel comfortable in.

"I knew that during a wax appointment where women feel vulnerable, I could have the power to change their negative views on their body.

"I love my job for this reason, I am constantly changing their lives."

Jess added that after having a wax, she's known her clients to 'start a new hobby, let their husband see their vagina for the first time, wear shorts, not bother about pigmentation on their vulva anymore, and realise they are not alone in their worries'.

Though of course, alongside all of the amazing reasons that made Jess fall in love with waxing - there's some jaw-dropping stories, too.

When asked what the 'weirdest' thing is that happened on the job, Jess didn't skip a beat.

She said: "It could be when a client had a prolapsed uterus and she didn’t even know about it. Or when I was peed on? Not sure which gets the weirdest award."

She added: "People say crazy stuff all the time during a wax. I am sworn at constantly."

For full disclosure, that's to be expected when you're having your pubic hair ripped out at the root.

Jess also has some words of wisdom to share with those who want to get a wax.

"The worst habit a client has is picking ingrown hairs! Stop picking and exfoliate instead," she advises.

As well as this, she shares: "A client should never use scented lotions or cleanser on their vulva or vagina and most definitely do not wax your own Hollywood!"
