Scott Peterson, the man currently serving a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering his pregnant wife Laci, has spoken out about his theory of what really happened.

Scott has always maintained his innocence in the abhorrent slaying.

The three part docuseries, American Murder: Laci Peterson, premiered on Netflix on 14 August, and viewers have been left shaken to the core.

Laci was eight months pregnant when she went missing in 2002 and her husband Scott, and her father, raised the alarm to law enforcement.

Her body was later found in 2003 as well as that of her unborn child, who she had intended to call Conner.

The 27-year-old seemingly vanished into thin air from her home in California and her remains were found in San Francisco Bay.

It later emerged Scott was having an extra-marital affair in the months leading up to Laci's disappearance and death.

Peterson pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder at his arraignment.

He is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole but has always maintained no wrongdoing, with the Los Angeles Innocence Project having taken on his case.

He has now shared his theories on what 'really' happened to Laci.

He has alleged in a Peacock documentary, Face to Face with Scott Peterson, that a 'burglary' was behind the disappearance of his wife.

In a video interview given from inside the Mule Creek State Prison, Scott said: "There was a burglary across the street from our home. And I believe that Laci went over there to see what was going on, and that’s when she was taken.”

Elsewhere in the documentary, he claimed: “There are so many instances where there was evidence that didn’t fit the detectives’ theory that they ignored. People want the answer they believed in to be the answer.”

He has also stated his regret at not testifying during his trial.

He said: "If I have a chance to get the reality out there, if I have the chance to show people what the truth is and if they’re willing to accept it, maybe that takes a little bit of hurt off my family. And that would be the biggest thing that I can accomplish right now.”

Scott was accused by officials of faking a voicemail which he left for Laci, saying he would see her 'in a bit'.

Scott maintained it was a genuine message but detectives - who reveal in the documentary they still maintain he's guilty - think otherwise.

Detective Al Brocchini says: "To me, it was really meant for me to hear it."
