Grey’s Anatomy fans have shared their sad theory after noticing what they reckon is a clue that Dr Christina Yang is coming back.

Now, any avid watchers of the long-running ABC medical drama series will no doubt know that the fandom surrounding it is a dedicated one indeed.

And with the show, which began nearly two decades ago - now having 22 series, with the latest premiering just last month (9 October) - it's understandable why the cast sees such a rotation.

But, with all that said, it's clear some of Grey's Anatomy's core cast members will never be forgotten, and that's exactly the case for Sandra Oh, who plays Christina on the show.

Oh was on the series from its premiere in 2005 until she left in 2014, appearing in seasons one through 10.

But, after one eagle-eyed fan clocked that the official Grey's Anatomy Instagram account started following her, others couldn't help but speculate what this could mean for the future of the show and whether her possible inclusion could also indicate a 'farewell' final season to the iconic programme once and for all.

One fan account posted the revelation to X, writing: "Grey’s Anatomy started following Sandra Oh on Instagram."

A second rushed in: "If she comes back, I think it’s definitely the final season."

"Oh it's ending ending," declared a third, while a fourth agreed: "They would do a farewell season before the show ends."

Another piped up: "I fear this is sending me into a spiral."

And a final social media user pleaded: "PLEASEEEE BRING MOTHER BACK OMGGG."

Oh has previously admitted she had been 'opening up to the idea' of returning to Grey’s Anatomy.

"What I have noticed, this is 10 years out from leaving the show, is the deep appreciation that I have for the people who appreciate Cristina," she told The Interview.

"It is that love that has made me go, ‘Oh. The fans really, really, really want it,’ and for the first time, that's when I started opening up the idea."

However, she concluded: "But for me, I think to really be true to the people who enjoy your work, you have to be true to yourself. So at this point, I don’t think so."

Grey's Anatomy is currently available to stream on Disney+
