Grey’s Anatomy fans divided over who ended Amelia and Toni’s relationship as new season hints at their future

The new season of Grey’s Anatomy delivered a shocking twist in Amelia and Toni’s relationship, but the unexpected development has left fans divided over how their story unfolded.

At the end of season 22, Toni (played by Jen Landon) was finally ready to start dating Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). But things went awry when Toni caught Amelia in an entanglement with Cass (Sophia Bush).

Toni was so distraught she left to take some time away from Amelia, but in the season 23 premiere, the two share a kiss.

Amelia’s decision to hook up with her ex-wife Cass made her relationship with Toni all the more complicated.

Of course, TV relationships will always have a fair share of shippers but some Grey’s fans are sharing their frustrations over the handling of another one of Amelia’s relationships.

Speaking about Amelia and Toni following the premiere, one fan on Reddit asked: “Is anyone else annoyed they always mess with Amelia’s relationships? She had such a great thing starting with Toni and never really has interacted with Dr. Cass Beckman. I don’t feel they paint her in a good light, she has done so much work to better herself, she deserves something great and stable.”

One fan agreed, writing: “I like the idea of having Sophia Bush on the show, just not like this. Amelia is one of my favourites and I just want her to be happy.”

Another viewer confessed: “I don’t care for Toni as a character at all. She’s cold but not in an interesting way. Amelia deserves better. I don’t want her to be with Cass because that whole open marriage situation would get messy. Amelia deserves someone who wants her and only her and with no doubt in their mind. I didn’t even realise how much I care about Amelia until Toni showed up.”

However a third fan shared: “This was one of the first times I felt like Amelia wasn’t acting incorrectly.”

They added: “Amelia doesn’t want to have to beg someone to chose her so she moved on and Cass was a safe bet since she’s looking for casual anyway.”

Meanwhile, the unexpected twist has left Grey’s Anatomy fans divided over whether Amelia was in the wrong or if Toni’s mixed signals played a part in their relationship drama.

“The tension between Amelia and Toni is unreal,” reads one reaction on X. “I understand why Toni is upset but I still maintain that Amelia didn’t do something wrongToni was giving her all the signals that she was going back to her ex wife!”

Despite the debate over how their relationship has unfolded, other fans remain hopeful that Amelia and Toni could have a happy ending.

“I will never fully trust Grey’s Anatomy with Amelia, but it truly feels like Toni is her happily ever after and I love that for her,” one viewer wrote.

One person who knows what’s next is show runner Meg Marinis who sat down with Variety to explain Amelia’s decision to sleep with Cass while also teasing the debates that happen in the writer’s room about Amelia.

“If you look at the history of the character of Amelia, even going all the way back to Private Practice, she has this tendency to self-sabotage, and I was really interested in seeing a piece of growth from that self-sabotage where she can at least acknowledge and name it. She didn’t intend to cheat on Toni with Cass because she wanted to cheat. She slept with her because she was hurt, and she thought that Toni was going back to her ex-wife. We made it look like Toni was going back with the ex-wife,” Marinis said.

The showrunner also revealed that the writers themselves were divided over who was at fault for the couple’s relationship troubles.

“We have debates about this in the writers’ room on who was at fault here, because a lot of people are like, ‘Team Amelia! Toni strung her along in those last two episodes saying, “I might go back with her. I might not go back with her.”’ But then a lot of people are like, ‘No, Amelia slept with somebody else! She’s dead to Toni!’ So it really depends on who you ask,” she said.

While praising the actors, Marinis hinted: “So we’re just going to have to see if they can find this new happiness, but it’s Grey’s. We’ll throw things at them, don’t worry.”
