Fans of Grey's Anatomy are debating over which character's eye is shown in the show's opening credits.

Over its 21 seasons, Shonda Rhimes' medical TV drama has introduced a whole host of characters that viewers have fallen in love with.

It's also killed off so many that fans can't listen to Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars' without hyperventilating (rest in peace Derek Shepherd).

But, while Grey's Anatomy has been bringing people together since it first aired back in 2005, there are certain things we just can't agree on.

Which character's death was the most traumatising to watch? Should Alex Karev have left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to reunite with Izzie?

And whose eye is shown during the opening credits?

A debate about the mysterious eye started on Reddit after one user posted a screenshot in the site's r/greysanatomy thread.

Alongside the image, they wrote: "20 years later I still don't know whose eye this is??? Everyone always said it's Meredith but it always looked more like Addison to me. Anyone else???"

And reactions to the question were mixed.

One person wrote: "It’s supposed to be Meredith."

Another agreed, commenting: "I always thought it was Meredith tbh," while a third said: "I’ve always thought it was Ellen," referring to Ellen Pompeo, the actress behind Meredith Grey.

Many suspected the eye could belong to Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey (Liliane Lathan/ABC via Getty Images)

But others agreed with the original poster, with one saying: "I always thought it's Addie."

Another penned: "I saw Addisons eyes too!!!"

In reality though, the most likely answer is neither, as pointed out by multiple Redditors who commented that it was simply b-roll footage to pad out the opening sequence.

"I think it’s just B roll. Random actor," one user wrote, while another elaborated: "It’s probably supposed to be Ellen but it’s a random eyebrow model or something."

A third explained: "Just an actor/model. I was a model and once my legs were used for the poster for an HBO show, I was not on the show, but my legs were the primary focus of the poster."

And it's (potentially) good news for Grey's Anatomy fans as the actor behind one of the show's most beloved characters is teasing a potential return.

While nothing has been confirmed, in a recent interview with Entertainment Live, Sandra Oh revealed that she longer completely dismisses the idea of reprising her iconic role of Cristina Yang.

The Killing Eve star said: "For the longest time, it has always been a hard no. And it's just... I don't know. I just don't know.

"I don't feel the need to revisit, but I also profoundly understand the audience's love for this character, because I've seen it for the past 10 years. That's the part that makes me just go, 'hmmm'."
