It's been a few days now since the latest Bridget Jones movie hit cinemas on Friday (14 February).

The fourth instalment in the beloved franchise, Mad About the Boy, stars the likes of Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant and others, along with new love interests, Leo Woodall and Chiwetel Eijofor.

Yep, you heard me.

While we ended the most recent flick in the franchise, Bridget Jones' Baby (2016), with Bridget and Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth) getting married with their newborn in attendance, the pair never actually got their happy ending.

We learn that Bridget is now a widower after having two adorable kids with Mark before he was tragically killed while on a humanitarian mission in Sudan.

Navigating life as a single mum in London, Bridget - now in her 50s - then later finds herself dating a 29-year-old, a young man named Roxster played by Woodall, as well as sparking a connection with her son's science teacher, Scott (Eijofor).

I won't give too much away after that, but let's just say fans were seriously taken aback after finding out how the plot had taken so much of a turn as they rushed to social media to deliver an unexpected warning to anyone yet to watch the movie.

One Twitter user urged: "I would like to warn people going to see Bridget Jones to take an entire packet of tissues to sob into."

"Guys do not watch the new Bridget Jones movie when you're about to get your period I cried like a b*tch at least 5 times what the f*ck I thought this was supposed to be a comedy," advised a second, while a third confessed: "First 20 seconds and I'm already bawling my eyes out…"

A fourth chimed in: "Just watched the new Bridget Jones movie while on period rip mark Darcy why did they do this to u."

"My eyes are still puffy from crying over Bridget Jones," admitted a fifth, while a sixth commented: "The absolute betrayal of the new Bridget Jones making me ugly cry in the first 15 min."

A seventh weighed in: "Bridget Jones mad about the boy was so beautiful and so sad ugh I ugly cried."

"Wasn’t expecting Bridget Jones mad about a boy to be the most soul crushing triggering movie for me but it’s safe to say ill never watch that movie again after how much it made me cry," penned another.

And a final social media user added: "Wish I’d have known the new Bridget Jones had a strong focus on grief and healing before i watched it…

"Spent a large chunk of the film sobbing - probably because i understood, but through a different kind of loss. And because it was so good, obviously.
