Love Island stars wear sunglasses in bed for very practical purpose

Across 13 series, Islanders often wear sunglasses in bed in the morning - and it’s not just because of bright lights.

Why do Love Island contestants wear sunglasses indoors and yes, sometimes even in bed? It’s one of those instantly recognisable villa quirks that returns every season, but it still manages to confuse both new and returning viewers.

From sleepy morning debriefs to the now-iconic bedside close-ups, Islanders are often seen keeping their shades on. At first glance, it might look like an attempt to dodge the bright lights and the cameras while they’re half-awake, or a chance to show off a designer brand. But there’s a bit more going on behind the lenses.

With Series 13 on our screens, fans are once again zeroing in on sunglasses like the ones Mica wears, and asking the same question all over again: why are they still wearing them indoors?

Love Island star Tasha Ghouri said she was one for he few Islanders who didn’t feel the need to cover her eyes in the morning.

However she explained why some of her co-stars preferred wearing shades in bed and while the reason is related to cameras, it’s not the reason you think.

"I was probably the only one who didn't wear sunglasses in the morning, I got used to it!" Tasha told Wales Online.

She said that the camera and the sudden bright lights used for filming could be quite harsh for the Islanders in the morning.

"It is bright because it is literally like 'boom' [lights come on] and even though you've got your eyes closed, your eyes just go light inside so everyone puts their sunglasses on," she said.

She did confirm that some Islanders use sunglasses not just to protect their eyes from the lights but some of them would use shades to get some extra sleeping time, she revealed.

"But people would sleep behind the glasses and the voice of God [villa voiceover] used to tell them off and be like: 'We can see you're sleeping behind the sunglasses!'" Tasha said.

So far, series 13 has also introduced a whole new category of accessory into the chat - handbags.

Contestant Ellie from Scotland has gone viral for sporting handbags. She’s worn them around the villa and has even matched them to her outfits.

Some fans speculated that the bags might be used to carry medical equipment, such as an inhaler or an epipen, however Ellie’s friend reportedly confirmed that this is not the case.

On the flip side, other viewers think the bags could hold makeup, or more specifically, her lip combo.

One person wrote: “She’s so cutesy!!! I would definitely carry my lip combo and power around in a cute purse around the villa. F having to go back to the dressing room.”

Demi from Love Island series six has shared her theory about Ellie’s bags on TikTok. She said Ellie is definitely carrying her lip combo because islanders aren’t allowed to leave makeup around the villa. Instead, they’d have to return to the dressing room which sounds like a huge inconvenience.

“Ellie carrying a bag on Love Island has me crying, but I’m so living for it. I’m telling you now that bag is probably empty minus her lip combo just sprawling about in the bag as she walks around. That bag is empty minus a lip liner, lip gloss and a lipstick,” she said.

“In the villa, you physically cannot take your lip combo around with you and you need to constantly top up. Think how much chatting you’re doing, kissing, drinking, whatever, and you can’t top up. There are no pockets on your dresses, you physically can’t walk around the villa holding it. So, what do you do? Ellie has a solution.”
