Dakota Johnson opens up on ‘spicy sapphic scene’ with Anne Hathaway in Verity
Dakota Johnson has opened up about filming the rather steamy scenes she shares with Anne Hathaway in Verity, describing the experience as 'incredibly enjoyable'.
The pair star alongside Josh Hartnett in the upcoming psychological thriller, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel of the same name.
Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer who is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett) to complete a bestselling book series after his wife Verity (Hathaway) is left unable to write following a car accident.

Lowen moves into the Crawford family home to work on the unfinished novels, but things quickly take a sinister turn. As she digs deeper into Verity’s life and discovers disturbing secrets, the lines between reality, fiction and fantasy begin to blur.
That includes some decidedly sapphic moments between Lowen and Verity, with the trailer already giving fans a glimpse of Johnson and Hathaway sharing a kiss.
And Johnson has now revealed just how involved those scenes were.
Speaking to Out, the Hollywood A-lister was asked about her 'spicy sapphic scenes' with Hathaway.
"Spicy sapphic scenes! I love that! That'll be on my tombstone. It was very technical, but obviously incredibly enjoyable. I got to make out with the two of them for a few hours! One of them would be under me, one would slide out, and then another would slide in. It was very technical, and that is art," Johnson said.
Meanwhile, Hartnett shared: "We had such great chemistry as friends on set! The sexual scenes were a little bit goofy when we weren't filming.
"You have to keep it light and keep moving! The chemistry in the film is palpable. It comes from mutual respect and understanding."
Verity director, Michael Showalter, previously told Variety that Hathaway and Johnson improvised their 'very sexy' kissing scene.
"It started with 'we need some sexy stuff to happen,'" he recalled.
"In the book, she’s looking at the picture of Harper, has the conversation with Jeremy, she talks about how great he was, and they have this intimate-hug moment that I thought had the potential to be something very sexually charged."
Showalter continued: "And it’s just a hug, but it’s between two people who are in such strange contexts and who desperately need to be hugged.
"What’s interesting is, Lowen is turned on. She’s hugging him in his profound moment of grief that then turns erotic, and where do you put that energy?"
The director added that Hathaway improvised the kissing scene, which ultimately made it into the flick's trailer.
"It really evolved into Anne and Dakota saying, 'What if while she’s making out with him, it turns into [Anne]?' And me going, 'If you want to do that, yeah,'" he said.
"And I thought there was something very sexy — erotic — about Dakota being like, 'I’m just going to sit on your lap and start kissing you.' She sees [Jeremy] and just goes there, and that felt like the beginning of something that felt transgressive. She took this thing that she wants, and he’s there for it."
Verity is set to hit selected cinemas on Friday (2 October)
