Sabrina Carpenter’s VMAs joke was bleeped out during speech with Madonna

Sabrina Carpenter’s initial reaction to Madonna’s claims about her team was bleeped at the VMAs—here’s exactly what she said.

On Sunday (27 September), former Disney Channel actress Carpenter, 27, and Madonna, 68, went home with the coveted best collaboration award for their track ‘Bring Your Love’.

The song was released just days after the pair’s surprise spot at Coachella 2026 and was used to open the proceedings in downtown Los Angeles with Charli XCX, actor Seth Rogen, and Sombr.

When ‘Bring Your Love’ was called by Superman’s David Corenswet and Scream 7’s Isabel May, the ‘Espresso’ singer and Madge headed to the Peacock Theatre stage to pick up the Moon Person.

Madonna used the opportunity to reveal that she was initially aired by Carpenter’s team regarding the award-winning collab.

“Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am, and when five days passed and I still didn’t get connected with Sabrina and didn’t hear back from her about whether or not she didn’t want to do a song with me — five days — I DMed her,” the Evita actress revealed.

“This is a true story! She answered me back, and within weeks we were in the studio together; it was fabulous.”

Carpenter, whose ‘House Tour’ picked up the MTV Video Music Award for best editing on the evening, laughed before taking the mic.

Those watching the MTV VMAs at home would have noticed that the Pennsylvania native’s speech was beeped—and it’s because she dropped a bomb.

“My team is sh***ing themselves backstage,” she joked as the audio cut out.

“My team replies, just so everybody knows, they do respond to people,” Carpenter could be heard saying. “But I respond faster, so direct line to me is always the best way to get in contact.”

Fans had a lot to say after Carpenter and Madonna opened the VMAs, with one social media user commenting: “Madonna x Sabrina is so chaotic #vmas.”

A second added: "The #VMAs kinda feel important again thanks to this Madonna performance.”

Madonna said ‘career was over’ after first VMA show

Madonna went home with seven VMAs on Sunday evening, including: best album for Confessions II, artist of the year, and best dance, best cinematography, best choreography, and best long form video for Confessions II - The Film.

During her artist of the year acceptance speech, the ‘Like a Prayer’ legend reminisced about performing at the very ceremony 43 years ago.

“Some of you were probably not born—I think most of you were probably not born—but I performed at the first MTV Awards 43 years ago. Yes.

“I had a little problem with my shoes, and one of my stilettos fell off, and I dove onto the stage to try to, like, make myself look cute and sexy, and I meant to do it. And my dress went up, and my butt cheek was hanging out, and in those days, butt cheeks were not hanging out.”

She continued, claiming that she went backstage feeling ‘really proud’ of herself after the performance.

“My manager told me that my career was over. That is the truth. Not my manager, now. No. He was the assistant to the manager. It's best not to say anything,” the mother-of-six quipped.

She went on to say she’d spent the last year and a half ‘finding herself’ as an artist again whilst ‘really making the music’ that she ‘wanted to make’.

“And to me, that really is the definition of being an artist, and my hope for all of you here tonight is that you spend the next year, or the next 10 years, or the rest of your life, doing the same: finding yourself and believing in yourself.”
