Miley Cyrus has candidly reflected on her famous family’s ‘dark decade’ where they ‘weren’t speaking to each other’.
The Hannah Montana star, 33, appeared on the podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky back in June 2025, and the episode was re-run on the platform this week.
She delved into the highly-publicised fall-out that her family endured when her country music star father, Billy Ray Cyrus, and talent manager mother Tish Cyrus-Purcell, got divorced.
The couple filed for divorce in 2022 after 29 years of marriage, after which rumours started swirling that Miley had sided with her mother.

Thankfully, though, the Cyruses now have a positive relationship after reconciling in early 2025.
Speaking on last year’s podcast episode, Miley admitted: “We had a really difficult, you know, dark decade, we had one of those. Half of us weren’t speaking to each other at one point. We cleaned all that up.”
She added, “That was a really important part of my year; this year was all of my family putting those lines of communication back together.”

Miley explained that she had ‘a lot of loyalty’ to her mother during the difficult time - something that led to a years-long public estrangement from her dad.
Revealing the lesson she learned, she said: “Definitely, in that situation, I watched what happens when you don’t clean things up as they’re happening.
“They really do stack, and then all of a sudden you go, ‘Oh my God, it’s been 10 years, and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start, this is like emotional hoarding.”
“But I just kind of bust through the pile that was stacked and go, I’m here, you’re here, let’s start by having a good time together, and then as we start bringing some happiness and joy into each other’s life, then we’ll just be in a better place to have these conversations.”

Fans rushed to the comments of Monica Lewinsky’s podcast to praise Miley as the clip resurfaced, with one YouTube user writing: “Love this interview so much. Miley is such a mature and beautiful human being.”
A second wrote: “Love her honesty and strength,” and a third added: “I loved this whole conversation.”
In a New York Times interview last year, Miley elaborated that ‘timing is everything’ and as she’s gotten older, she’s learned to ‘respect her parents as individuals’.
She added, “My mom really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard.
“And so I think I took on some of my mom's hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain."
