While the initial excitement of seeing Bieber with a newborn was clearly a lot for some fans - his accompanying caption quickly clarified the situation.

The tot was not in fact his and his wife Hailey's, but actually the child of 41-year-old E! News host, Jason Kennedy, and his wife, 35-year-old fashion blogger Lauren Scruggs.

The 'Peaches' singer captioned the pics: "Meet my niece Poppy Ford Kennedy.

"Anyone who knows @thejasonkennedy and @thelaurenkennedy know their journey and challenges with having kids."

He continued: "They now have two beautiful babies that I’m absolutely obsessed with."

Bieber concluded the post with three emojis showing just how excited he was followed by three flaming heart emojis.

The post has already clocked up over three million likes in less than 24 hours since it was posted at the time of writing, with thousands of comments from fans eager to share their reaction to Biebs and the baby.

"You and babies will always melt my heart," penned one Instagram user.

A second wrote: "This is the sweetest thing in the world."

And a final Instagram user theorised: "This can only mean one thing... they’re practicing for baby Bieber."

Bieber also posted more baby content to his Instagram Story showing Hailey, 26, cuddling the newborn who was fast asleep in her arms.

Hailey has previously opened up about how she's 'scared' to have children while being in the public eye.

Speaking in an interview with The Times, Hailey was asked if baby Biebers were on the horizon anytime soon, to which she laughed and responded: "I literally cry about this all the time! I want kids so bad but I get scared. It’s enough that people say things about my husband or my friends.

"I can’t imagine having to confront people saying things about a child.”

She continued: "We can only do the best we can to raise them. As long as they feel loved and safe."
