Jamie Dornan was reportedly 'hospitalised with heart attack symptoms' caused by 'toxic caterpillar' during a recent trip to Portugal.

According to the 50 Shades of Gray star's friend, Good Morning Britain presenter, Gordon Smart, the pair were on a lad's trip when they both fell mysteriously ill.

Opening up about that fateful incident on BBC's The Good, the Bad and the Unexpected podcast, Smart reckoned their health issues were a result of a little too many the previous night.

However, the real culprit to their illness turned out to be toxic pine processionary caterpillars.

"We had a great time the first day, played loads of golf, went out, lots of wine was drunk and then we got on to espresso martinis," Smart explained.

But, just the very next day, the group were left feeling 'absolutely dreadful'.

According to Forest Research, pine processionary moth caterpillars have tiny hairs containing an irritating protein that causes painful skin, eye, and throat irritations.

Not exactly what you want to endure while holidaying with your pals - I'd take a rough hangover over that any day.

Opening up about his symptoms, Smart said he had a 'tingling in [his] left hand and then tickling in [his] left arm'.

"I’m the son of a GP and thought, 'This is normally the sign of the start of a heart attack'. Now, I’m a fairly healthy guy, but once you start thinking you’re having a heart attack, you’re pretty sure that you’re convincing yourself that you are having one," he added.

Smart ended up going to hospital where his resting heart rate was found to be extremely high.

During the hospital visit, the doctor had asked him to explain what he had been drinking the previous day to which he recalled: "As a Scottish man in Portugal, when you start saying, 'Well, I think there were nine bottles of white wine, I had six espresso martinis', and I could see him shaking his head disgusted with the Scottish specimen in front of him."

After he was finally discharged and returned to his hotel, Smart was shocked to see Dornan hooked up to medical equipment, too.

"Jamie said, 'Dear me. Gordon, about 20 minutes after you left, my left arm went numb, my left leg went numb, my right leg went numb, and I found myself in the back of an ambulance,'" Smart explained.

And to make matters even worse, when Dornan finally left the hospital, the paramedics asked the poor bloke for a selfie with Smart adding: "Which is really what you want when you’re being wheeled out of a hospital room."

Tyla has reached out to Jamie Dornan's representatives for comment.
