En Vogue’s former lead singer has revealed he reason why she has been living in her car.

Dawn Robinson has opened up to fans that she’s been living in her car for the past three years in a video uploaded to YouTube.

The singer, who is best known for her hit, Free Your Mind, posted the clip on Tuesday 11 March, explaining that she decided to live in her car after having moved in with her parents in 2020.

She explained: “You guys, for the past three years, I have been living in my car. I said it, oh my gosh, it’s out.”

She shared that she did a ’thousand interviews’ five years ago when she was living in Las Vegas with her parents, and while it was ‘wonderful’, she realised that she needed to move out of the environment.

The 90s star went on to explain that it was ‘wonderful until it wasn’t’ and that she loves her mother, but during her time staying with her family, her mum ‘became very angry’.

It was at this point that she decided to move into her vehicle and live on her own.

She said to her fans: “That was wonderful until it wasn’t. I love my mom, but she became very angry. A lot of her anger, she was taking out on me. I was her target all the time and I was like, ‘I can’t deal with this.’”

Sadly, she was then let down after having been sleeping in her car for ‘a month’ when one of her managers asked her to move to Los Angeles where she could stay with him.

However, when ‘I got to his place, he actually didn’t have room for me’, so she had to check into a hotel for eight months.

It was there that she began looking into ‘car life’, similar to van lifers, except you live in your car.

To her, this was a turning point, and she began to get into the idea of making her vehicle her permanent home.

“I loved what I was seeing. I just thought, ‘Wow I can do that. I can do this,’” she said.

Unfortunately, the singer doesn’t have many family members she can turn to so that she can live in a home, explaining in the clip that she’s estranged from her two siblings and her ‘forever mother-in-law.’

But for her, she feels ‘free’ being in her car, stating: “I felt like, ‘Wow, this is so different.’ I felt like I was on a camping trip.”

For her hygiene needs, Robinson uses a gym’s shower facilities as she is a member.

While it’s not something that you typically hear of famous people doing, the singer has no regrets, and actually admitted that a lot of celebs also sleep in their cars.

At the end of the video, she revealed that she doesn’t want anyone’s sympathy, and that her living situation is a learning curve, stating: “Like I said, I’m learning about who I am. I’m learning myself as a person (and) as a woman.”
