Ariana Grande has revealed the surprising reason behind one of her most iconic looks - the oversized hoodie and heeled boots combo.

Fans of the 'One Last Time' singer, 32, will know that back in 2018, it was rare that you'd see her without a baggy sweatshirt, an extra-high ponytail and knee-high boots.

The look became somewhat synonymous with this era of Ariana, with fans recreating it and sporting it to wear to her concerts.

But the reason behind the fashion choice is actually quite a sad one, as the Wicked actress revealed as she featured in a new instalment of Vogue's 'Life in Looks' series.

For those unfamiliar with the YouTube series, it sees celebrities talk people through some of their most iconic styles and looks throughout the years, with previous A-listers who've taken part including Anne Hathaway, Naomi Campbell, FKA twigs and Miley Cyrus.

During her episode, Arana was presented with an array of 21 outfits to delve into, including some she donned on the set of Victorious, as well as iconic Met Gala moments and eye-catching Coachella looks.

She also broke down some of the glamorous outfits she sported while promoting Wicked and Wicked: For Good.

However, one moment that stuck out to fans as we say, was Ariana talking about her oversized hoodie era.

The singer and actress was presented with a photo of herself taken in New York City in 2018, where she was wearing a black oversized jumper with matching knee-high heeled boots and a green crossbody bag.

She said: "Okay wow. 2018. I am leaving my old apartment in New York. This was a very strange time in my life.

"I was processing a lot, and I always wanted to hide away in something really cozy," she explained, adding: "But I remember that the boots still made me feel c**t."

Ariana admitted: "I genuinely, at the time, did not have the mental energy to consider clothing. So the easiest thing for me was to throw on a sweatshirt and a c***y boot and that was how it happened.

"I'm sorry to say it. This is just the honest truth."

Reacting to the comments on social media, fans expressed their surprise, with one Twitter user writing: "Fashion really became her armour during a hard time."

A second agreed: "Ariana saying the boots gave her power while the sweater gave her comfort… iconic energy."

Noting the popularity of the look at the time, a third penned: "And still she created an iconic style signature for so many people."

While a fourth agreed: "Ariana’s reflection shows how style can be both comfort and empowerment even during tough times, fashion can be a way to express yourself."

And a fifth wrote: "That’s actually so real turning comfort into an iconic era without even trying."

Others chimed in with: "Accidental fashion eras are always the best ones" and: "Crazy how a low-energy outfit choice turned into something so iconic."
