Well, that was awkward.

A This Morning segment went comically wrong today when a grumpy man told off a milkman for delivering items he "doesn't want".

Viewers were left squirming in their seats by the live-on-air moment, which was intended to celebrate Britain's unsung heroes during the coronavirus crisis.

The segment showed Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby following the rounds of milkman Darren Barnes in Guildford (

Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby were following the rounds of milkman Darren Barnes in Guildford.

But things got awkward when Darren was filmed dropping off a care package to one of his regular customers.

Unfortunately, the recipient turned out to be less than impressed by the act of kindness.

The segment started off cheerily enough, with a passionate Darren talking viewers through his typical routine.

"This is the sort of guy that I love," he enthused to Holly and Phil. "Served him for years.

"I'm going to make you safe and we're going to make sure we supply you with all the things we can. He's a lovely chap, I've served him for years."

Darren held up the the crate of milk, orange juice and bread.

"This is what we're going to do, the vulnerable people, the people in society, we're going to do it so well," he told the camera.

"We do it as a team."

Unfortunately, as the hero milkman walked to the door and placed down the crate, he received a rather moody response from his customer.

Emerging from the doorway, the resident snapped: "You keep delivering stuff I don't want!"

*Cringe.*

Darren managed the situation calmly, responding: "Ok, that's just a little bit we've got there, I'll take it back later. There's a few extra bits there."

Phil and Holly were left visibly awkward - and naturally, Twitter went wild.

"Awww... I'm not sure whether isolation is getting to me or what but I'm crying to the milk man on this morning. What a lovely gent," wrote one This Morning fan.

'I'm crying to the milkman on This Morning," added another. "What a lovely gent."

"You're delivering stuff I don't want. What an ungrateful sod!" chimed in a third.

Well done Darren, the way you handled that confrontation makes you even more of a hero in our eyes.
