The Walking Dead fans, big news. A movie based on the popular apocalypse series is on its way in 2021, with filming beginning in the spring.

But what will it be about? Who will star? And will any much loved characters return?

We're here to give you all the info you need - let the countdown begin...

The trilogy will be focussed on Rick's journey (

What will the movie be about?

From what we know so far, the movie will be very much focused on Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) picking up from when he exited the series along with Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) after that helicopter ride.

Very few details have been given about the plot - with The Walking Dead boss Scott Gimple explaining in the autumn that the script was still being worked on. But, we do know it's a spin-off trilogy and considering it's dubbed the 'Rick Grimes movie', it's expected to reveal exactly what happened to Rick after he was last seen boarding the helicopter.

Who will star in the film?

Alongside Andrew as Rick, Pollyanna McIntosh is expected to return as Anne. And - much to the delight of fans - Michonne could also be making a return. Played by Danai Gurira, Scott explained Michonne - who left the series in Season 10 - will be returning to one of TWD spin-offs at some point.

"Absolutely. You'll be seeing Michonne, yeah," Scott Gimple told Collider.

"We're going to be telling stories with Michonne again. The end of her on the series was, in many ways, the start of the story."

Other characters are yet to be announced.

When will it be released?

Well, it seems like it's closer than ever after Andrew Lincoln revealed it could be underway in 2021 - if everything goes to plan.

It was supposed to have already started filming, but like pretty much all movies and shows this year, has experienced some delays due to Covid.

Speaking to Associated Press, Andrew said: "It does feel like there is a certain sense of positivity and the cavalry's coming with the vaccines.

"And there's a real sort of sense of a renewal, hopefully."

Meanwhile, Scott also teased that it was in the works back in October.

"We're following the same general plan but movies take a little longer and we're playing with it in all sorts of directions," he said.

"And then, the pandemic happened, which gave us the opportunity or the necessity to do that.

"We're still doing that. Andy is super involved. [The show's creator Robert Kirkman] is super involved. It really is proceeding. It's just that current circumstances have given us a little extra time that we seem to need anyways. We really want to do it right."

There will also be a spin off starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride - aka favourites Daryl and Carol (

Will it be released on TV?

It's expected the trilogy films will actually be released in cinemas as opposed to on our TV screens, but as ever this year, it really does depend on the ever-changing pandemic.

What other spin offs are on the way?

As fans will know, The Walking Dead TV series will end after Season 11, but there are also another two spin-offs on the way, to ease the pain!

AMC has already given the green light to a new spin off, starring Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride (aka favourites Daryl and Carol) which is expected to debut in 2023.

In addition, a second spin off developed by Scott Gimple is also in the works. The anthology series Tales of The Walking Dead will feature stand-alone episodes focusing on the show's characters old and new.

TWD fans, there's lots to look forward to!
