The BBC has announced its long-awaited fantasy adventure The Luminaries is finally set to hit screens this year.

Based on the hit 2013 novel by Eleanor Catton, the six-part series stars His Dark Materials actress Eva Green and is billed as 'an epic story of love, murder and revenge'.

Set in the boom years of the 1860s gold rush, the tale unfolds on the 'Wild West Coast' of New Zealand's South Island and follows the men and women who travelled across the world to make their fortunes in the 19th century. If you liked Deadwood, we think this will be right up your street.

It centres on the young adventurer Anna Wetherell (played by Eve Hewson) after she sails from Britain to New Zealand in the hopes of beginning a new life.

"There she meets the radiant Emery Staines, an encounter that triggers a strange kind of magic that neither can explain," the BBC explains.

"As they fall in love, driven together and apart by fateful coincidence, these star-crossed lovers begin to wonder: do we make our fortunes, or do our fortunes make us?"

It is not clear how faithful the series will be to the book, in which Anna is an opium-smoking prostitute who becomes embroiled in criminal circles.

The BBC gave us our first sneak peek of the series back in 2019 with a picture of Bond girl Green as Lydia Wells, a pivotal character in the dark and twisty tale.

And on Friday, the broadcaster shared a brand new poster, announcing that the series was 'coming soon' - much to the excitement of fans.

The drama was filmed on location in New Zealand and boasts a super-starry line-up, including Eve Hewson (Robin Hood), Himesh Patel (EastEnders) and Ewen Leslie (Top of the Lake).

Originally intended for BBC Two and TVNZ1 in New Zealand, it is now set for release on BBC One and is co-written by Eleanor Catton, the woman behind the Man Booker-prize winning novel that inspired it.
