*Spoilers for Gangs of London series 1 ahead*

When Gangs of London aired earlier this year on Sky, the network couldn't be prepared for the response.

The modern-day gangster drama became record-breaking as the biggest Sky Original of the past five years pulling in 2.23m viewers in its first week and overtaking the likes of last year's smash hit Chernobyl.

And the praise came thick and fast with fans and critics alike waxing lyrical about the nine-parter's thrilling plot and cinematic fight scenes. NME called it "Game of Thrones, but without the dragons," while fans compared it to a "modern day Peaky Blinders".

And the London-based drama is set to be enjoyed around the world as AMC in America have just picked up the rights to the show.

If you haven't had a chance to binge Gangs of London yet then get your skates on, because the drama has just been renewed for a second series based on the incredible response.

What happened in Gangs of London series 1 and how did it end?

Starring Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders), Sope Dirisu (Humans), Colm Meaney (Star Trek, Hell on Wheels, Layer Cake) and Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones, Suits), the action-packed thriller based in London's criminal underworld.

After the murder of Finn Wallace (played by Colm Meaney) - who is the head of a major crime gang - the peace between several organisations in the city is disturbed.

Finn was one of the most notorious criminals in London for over two decades. It's up to Sean Wallace (Joe Cole) to maintain control of the situation, but with a volatile and impulsive nature, as well as his desire for power, could spell trouble.

Sean becomes set on finding those who killed his father and enlists the help of the Dumani family.

What will Gangs of London series 2 be about?

Series 1 ended with the revelation that Finn was killed by the group's investors after stealing billions in attempt to escape their control and elope with his mistress, Floriana.

Setting up for series two, the organisation now want Sean dead and Alex Dumani as the new leader so it's guaranteed this will be explored in the second instalment.

For now, there's no official word on the plot, so we'll have to just wait and see. But what we do know is that AMC has joined on board as a co-producers so maybe we'll get some influence from our friends over the pond - whatever that might entail.

It's likely all the cast from series one will be back including Joe Cole, Sope Dirisu, Colm Meaney and Michelle Fairley whose characters all have unfinished business.

When will Gangs of London series 2 be released?

There's no official word on a release date yet, but it's likely Sky will be rushing to get production underway considering the phenomenal success of series 1.

Mid 2021 would be a reasonable assumption, giving production delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Either way, this is a show we're willing to wait for.

Gangs of London is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and TV streaming service NOW TV.
