Bridgerton news update - two new characters have reportedly been cast in major roles for the second season of Netflix's hugely popular Regency-era drama.

Newcomer Charithra Chandran is thought to have landed the role of Edwina in the hotly anticipated new series, which will be based on the second book in Julia Quinn's romance series The Viscount Who Loved Me.

Rupert Young, who is known for roles in Merlin, Doctor Who and Doc Martin has also been cast in a major role, Deadline reports.

The two new additions join Sex Education star Simone Ashley, who has been cast as lead Kate Sharma for the new series.

Production on Bridgerton's second series is thought to begin later this Spring, with the new season following the eldest Bridgerton sibling Anthony (played by Jonathan Bailey) in his quest for love.

The Viscount Who Loved Me sees Anthony fall for Edwina Sharma initially, before turning his attentions towards her older sister, Kate.

Rupert will play Jack, the newest member of the Ton with a connection to one of its most notable families and a Bridgerton mystery. The character was created for the series; he is not in the books.

Bridgerton was a huge hit for Netflix when it debuted on Christmas Day last year, with audience captivated by the blossoming love story between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dyvenor) and the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page).

Becoming infamous for its raunchy and full-frontal sex scenes, the series was watched by 82 million households in the first month of its release.

Bridgerton also became popular for breaking typical racial conventions in a period drama, reimagining high society London in the 1800's as a multi-racial world.

This convention will continue in the second series, with the book's Kate Sheffield to be renamed Kate Sharma in the series to reflect the family's Indian descent.
