Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has confirmed Season 3 of Derry Girls will begin filming this year, after suffering a delay due to the ongoing pandemic.

When Season 2 of the popular show ended back in 2019, it was immediately renewed for a third instalment. But sadly, like many of our favourite TV shows and films over the last 12 months, it suffered a delay.

"Can confirm Series 3 of Derry Girls is filming this year and I cannae bloody wait," Nicola tweeted.

"Covid has pushed back filming several times which has been so shite, but honestly the storylines in this series are the best we've ever done so I can't tell you how worth it the wait will have been."

And fans were so thrilled at the news, with one commenting: "I would just like to confirm that I'm very excited by this news."

While another said: "Omg omg omg I'm shaking I'm so excited. Can. Not. Wait. to see Clare again. You have always been my favourite. Then I saw you in #bridgertonnetflix and I thought all my Christmas's had came at once. Absolutely love you."

Meanwhile another person called it the "best news this year" and one added: "Fantastic news! I've lost count of how many times I've rewatched Derry Girls in lockdown."

Last month, Nicola gave fans a glimpse into what the upcoming season might have in store.

Speaking to her.ie, the 34-year-old explained: "I spoke to Lisa McGee recently and she talked me through the storylines.

"They're so brilliant, which doesn't surprise me - she's just incredible - but it made me want to do it right now. "

The hilarious sitcom follows Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland), their friends Michelle (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell) and Clare (Nicola Coughlan), and Michelle's English cousin James (Dylan Llewellyn) as they navigate their teenage years during the end of the early 1990s 'Troubles' in Derry.

And a new season might not be the only Derry Girls on the horizon, either. Last summer, creator Lisa McGee revealed they could be starting work on a movie pretty soon, too.
