Following the release of a long-awaited trailer last week, Channel 4 has given season two of Derry Girls an official air date.

The first episode of the beloved sitcom set in Northern Ireland during the troubles will hit Channel 4 on Tuesday, 5th March at 9.15pm.

Lisa McGee's second series will see Saoirse-Monica Jackson reprise her role as Erin, Louisa Harland as her cousin Orla, Nicola Coughlan as Clare, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell as Michelle plus more joining the starry line-up.

The preview at season two, which was released earlier this month, saw the gang reunited and heading off for a weekend away to see Take That in concert (or as Erin's mammy calls them, 'This and That'). They are also seen dancing to 'Oops Up Insider Your Head' at a school disco, bringing Derry Girls viewers absolute nostalgia.

Season one won a flurry of awards and accolades, with McGee picking up the gong for Best Comedy Writing on Television at the 2018 British Screenwriters' Awards.

It also won Best Comedy at last year's Irish Film and Television Awards, and was nominated for a number of other prizes at prestigious industry ceremonies.

Channel 4 boss Ian Katz said: "Derry Girls is a blast of fresh air. It's everything we want from Channel 4 comedy: young, warm, brimming with new talent and rooted in an underrepresented part of the country. And a hit to boot."

He added: "I'm delighted that we've commissioned a second series and can't wait to see what Lisa does next."

And it seems like this second season might not be the last for Derry Girls either, as Channel 4 is reportedly in "advanced talks" to commission a third, although there has been no confirmation just yet. Sounds promising to us!

Derry Girls hits Channel 4 on 5th March at 9.15pm.
