Now in the year 2021, people have been whisked back in time to the era of low-rise jeans and Juicy Couture after it was widely reported that Bennifer are back for a sequel - in other words, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck may be back together.
After their reunion was first reported by Page Six, with pictures showing Ben close to J.Lo's home, the pair were snapped in a car together in LA this week. The mere thought of them rekindling their early 2000s romance has set Twitter ablaze with nostalgia.
One Twitter user posted a meme of Adele with the lyrics of her song When We Were Young. They said: "Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck? I don't care if it's PR, IT'S CALLED NOSTALGIA AND IM HERE FOR IT."
A second user quipped: "Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are dating. In other news I saw the trailer for that new movie Mean Girls on MySpace."
Another commenter was totally in favour of Bennifer's unexpected return. "Please let Bennifer be a thing again. We all need some early 2000s vibes," they tweeted.
Some users are hoping J.Lo and Ben's reunion could be sign that life is returning to the good old days when things were much easier. "I hope @BenAffleck & @JLo get back together cause honestly the early 2000s were just better and their reunification will allow us to relive that that in a very small way."
However one woman is hoping that Bennifer is the only thing from 2002 making a comeback, writing: "Please let this be the only thing to come back from the early 2000s (Low rise jeans I'm looking at you in particular)."
Another Twitter user joked: "I can't believe y'all are making me read the phrase 'Bennifer' with my own two eyes in the year of our lord 2021."
Despite the nostalgia, one woman wanted to warn the Twitter universe to not text their exes from yesteryear in the wake of Bennifer part deux. "I don't know who needs to hear this, but Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez hanging out together, is not an excuse to text your ex."
Jennifer and Ben met onset of their critically panned movie Gigli, where the couple played gangers who fell in love. Although the movie flopped at the box office, sparks flew between its two stars. Jennifer dedicated her third album This Is Me... Then, to her then-fiancé Ben when it was released in November 2002. He also had a cameo in the lead single's music video Jenny From The Block, where the future Batman star rubbed J.Lo's bottom on a yacht.
Over the next year, Bennifer became a fixture on the cover of celebrity tabloid mags, and they are even credited for started the celebrity couple name blend trend which gave us TomKat (Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) and Kimye (Kim Kardashian and Kanye West).
Bennifer were due to wed in September 2003 but called off their nuptials the day before the ceremony citing media interference. Their break-up became official in January 2004.
There has been no confirmation from either J.Lo or Ben that Bennifer are back together. But, we can't help but think what else from 2002 could possibly have a comeback.
