Will Smith’s mother has spoken out on the Chris Rock Oscars controversy.

Carolyn Smith, 85, told Action News that the incident was the ‘first time I’ve ever seen him go off’.

She explained that the altercation between her son and the comedian was unusual for the actor, 53.

“He is a very even, people person,” she told the local news station.

“That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime.

She added: “I've never seen him do that.”

Carolyn also said that she spoke to her son on Monday 28th following the awards ceremony, and advised that he rest up and go on holiday.

She also added that she realised the drama would eventually pass.

Her comments come as Will Smith released a formal public statement following his slap on Chris Rock at the awards.

The Academy Award-winner posted a message on his Instagram account where he acknowledged his actions were not in keeping with his vision of 'love and kindness'.

"Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive," he said. "My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable.

"Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong.

"I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.

"There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

"I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world.

"I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard family.

"I deeply regret that my behaviour has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.

"I am a work in progress."

At the Oscars, Rock called out Jada Pinkett Smith before presenting the award for Best Documentary.

Jada was sitting in the front row with her husband Will when the comedian made a quip about her shaven head.
