Well, that's one way to style denim shorts.

Influencers have left fans wondering if they've forgotten to do their shorts up in a bizarre new trend sweeping Coachella.

The annual music festival boasts an A-list guest list, and this year was no different with celebs and influencers descending on Indio, California to take pictures in front of the iconic ferris wheel and (presumably) watch artists perform.

This year we couldn't help but notice a slew of attendees had left their denim shorts unbuttoned... on purpose.

Love Island stars Millie Court and Kaz Kamwi were seen rocking the tummy-baring trend in California over the weekend, alongside models Valentina Sampaio and Carina Zavline who also opted to roll their shorts down.

The trend has been met with some backlash, though, with some social media users baffled as to why choosing to unbutton your shorts is even a thing.

“Sorry, but why would you walk around with your shorts undone?”, one person asked.

“You look absolutely amazing but do you know you are flying low?”, another joked.

Taking to Twitter, another person asked: “Can someone please explain to me why unbuttoned shorts are a fashion look? Like how do they not fall down?”

“Didn’t know leaving your shorts unbuttoned was a trend now,” someone else tweeted.

Elsewhere on TikTok, people have been eyeing up the fashion trends at Coachella, and it appears that 2000s trends like low-waisted jeans, chainmail dresses, low-waisted mini skirts and tie-dye sets are back in full swing.

One person commented on the site: “Why is everyone so obsessed with Y2K fashion rn?”

“Getting some serious Paris Hilton vibes circa 2000,” another penned.

Someone else wrote: “This year is just full of SHEIN looking outfits and it’s so disappointing lmao.”

Explaining the unbuttoned denim shorts trend, celebrity stylist Alexis Knox tells Tyla that "low-rise jeans are back."

"The hip bone is making a return, made iconic in the noughties by pop stars like Britney Spears and Christina (Aguilera), who would push boundaries on how low they could go - ideally dangerously low!

"So, undoing the zip on your already low-rise jeans is a super risqué attention-grabbing way to nail that trend now - especially at Coachella, which has always been a festival where skin-baring looks are a must."

Alexis adds: "[Now] the trend goes one step further with the noughties style of intentionally wearing your thong underwear visible."

Prior to this, fashionistas have been channelling their inner early 2000s Pamela Anderson by recreating her iconic hairstyle.

But resurfaced fashion trends is something that Alexis is more than familiar with.

"Old trends circle back all the time - most notably every 20 years. Modern day style icons such as Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, and those designers and creators behind the scenes are taking inspiration from their youth, so it’s natural to see trends hit 20-year cycles."

"This means even elements of 00s trend are also inspired by the 80s, and every 20 years the ideas of the past are reimagined. So, be prepared to see plenty of crop tops, velour tracksuits, mini skirts that resemble belts making an appearance!"
