Royal fans have been thrown into hot debate over which living member of the royal family most closely resembles resurfaced pictures of the Queen Mother.

Glamis Castle in Scotland is not only the 'ancestral seat of the Earls Of Strathmore and Kinghorne' but also 'the childhood home of Her Majesty The Queen Mother'.

Both Princess Margaret - who was also born at the castle - and Princess Elizabeth visited Glamis frequently as children.

Since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Glamis Castle has taken to social media to give royal fans an insight into the royal's family life.

However, in looking through historic photographs, the castle archivist stumbled upon pictures of the Queen Mother which they believe look scarily like Princess Charlotte - daughter to the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Glamis Castle in Scotland wrote: "The youngest daughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore, Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon married the Duke of York and went on to become Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. You can find out more about her life and education at Glamis when visiting our current Children of Glamis Exhibition.

"When our castle archivist was looking at photographs of a young Lady Elizabeth below, we all agreed that there is a striking familial resemblance with her great-great-granddaughter, Princess Charlotte.

"Can you see the resemblance too?"

Many royal fans flocked to social media in agreement.

One said: "Princess Charlotte's resemblance to her great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth has always been evident. Right down to her royal wave."

"The resemblance is remarkable!" another wrote.

A third commented: "I have always thought she looks like her great granny!"

However, other royal fans flooded to the post with alternative ideas as to which living member of the royal family most closely resembles the Queen Mother, and also whether Princess Charlotte actually resembles someone else.

"Charlotte looks like Her Granny, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth Il!," one said.

Another compared the first picture of the Queen Mother to Princess Eugenie.

A third resolved: "I always think she looks more like princess Margaret, very pretty."

Princess Charlotte was last seen in public at her grandmother's funeral.

She was spotted reminding her older brother George when to bow, as well as sharing a sweet moment with her uncle, Prince Harry.

Similarly to her mother and father's title having changed to the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Charlotte and Prince George will now be known as Prince George of Wales and Princess Charlotte of Wales, while their little brother will be known as Prince Louis of Wales.
