Modern Family fans have leapt to social media to congratulate Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his partner on the latest addition to their family.

Ferguson - best known for his role as Mitchell Pritchett on US sitcom Modern Family - first announced he and partner Justin Mikita were 'expanding [their] family' earlier this year on 27 May.

In an update, Ferguson has revealed that the pair have welcomed their 'newest little one' - and second child - named Sullivan Louis Ferguson-Mikita.

Fans of the Modern Family star have since flooded to the Instagram post to congratulate the happy couple.

Posting a picture of the newborn in an 'Empires' baby grow, alongside images of himself and Mikita, the actor captioned the image: "Sad to be away from my @takemeoutbway fam tonight but we ran off to welcome our newest little one, Sullivan Louis Ferguson-Mikita.

"A special thanks to @drshahinghadir for helping us grow our family & our incredible surrogate and all of the nurses and doctors. We are overjoyed to be a family of four.

"My incredible understudy @timmytwright will be on tonight and tomorrow and I will be back in the ball game on Thursday 11/17. I know Tim has you all in wonderful hands.

The pair's doctor also responded to their post and thanks.

"You have the most perfect family now."

Speaking on surrogacy in an interview with Dr Ghadir, Ferguson explained the hardest part of the process was choosing an egg donor.

"There was a moment where we were like, 'Why are we looking white women. Why not another race?'" he questioned.

However, he noted the pair resolved: "If we have a half-Asian child of half-Black child, that's something we can't relate to.

"So we ended up going with a white egg donor, because we didn't want that extra layer of something we couldn't help them with."

Both of Ferguson and Mikita's sons have been born via surrogacy.

Ferguson and Mikita - who married on 20 July, 2013 - already have one child named Beckett Mercer Ferguson-Mikita who was born on 7 July, 2020.

Two-year-old Beckett was also born via surrogacy.
