A hotel in the Lake District has launched the UK's first ever 'sleep restaurant' and it sounds idyllic.

Don't worry, it doesn't mean you pay for a meal you then miss because of nodding off, it actually means that you enjoy a tasty dinner that has been specially curated with ingredients that hope to help you sleep better.

A lack of sleep is not only irritating, but it can severely affect our concentration levels as well as our mood and overall health and wellbeing.

We know how awful it is when the clock ticks on and hours have gone by without catching a single wink.

Nobody likes rocking up to work off the back of a few hours kip - it leaves us seriously grumpy.

And according to research by the Mental Health Foundation, up to one third of the population may suffer from sleep problems or insomnia.

Which is why hearing of anything we can do to help ourselves enjoy a few extra hours is always most welcome.

And thanks to bed brand Sealy, we can now head to the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa in Keswick, as the companies have joined up to arrange a menu featuring dishes that are designed scientifically to help you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

The specialised offerings are available until the end of March and are from the four star hotel's lounge and conservatory menu, as well as the room service menu.

Each of the 'sleep-inducing' dishes contain ingredients that in theory, should help regulate your sleep cycle. They are all selected off the back of Sealy's research that looked into the effects of diet on sleep.

So what exactly is the hotel serving up to its guests?

According to the hotel brand's website, you can expect pot-roasted cod with roasted thyme roots and potatoes, buttered spinach served with a balsamic fish jus that's packed full of Omega 3 - something which has been associated with increased sleep duration.

The hotel recommends this for those that wake up too early.

Or, perhaps a gourmet vegan spicy pizza is more up your street, that comes with black olives and jalapenos loaded with vegan cheese.

Packed with calcium and vitamin B, it should provoke the brain to produce higher levels of melatonin, resulting in a more controlled sleep-wake cycle, so it is ideal for those who go to bed too late and then struggle to get out of bed in the morning.

The hotel has plenty of other offerings on its menu too and you don't even need to splash out on staying overnight if you'd prefer not to (although we would 100 per cent consider going for it - it has a spa guys!)

You can simply book a meal in the lounge or conservatory at lunchtime to take advantage of the menu, then head home to your own bed and enjoy the positive (fingers crossed) effects of what you've eaten.

Natalie Armstong, Sealy UK sleep expert said: "Sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy body and mind, but far too often it is being overlooked.

"With our research finding that the average person in the UK wakes up feeling tired four days of every week, it's clear that we are in the middle of a sleeplessness epidemic, but for many of us, getting that elusive good night's sleep can seem like an impossible task."

Which is why the brand has stepped in to help. So here's to having a delicious meal followed by forty winks - we'll try anything!
