Leaked documents have revealed how Disney plans to recast the central characters in the upcoming remake of its classic 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The live-action movie, set for release in 2023, will see West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler taking the titular role, while a casting sheet suggests that her sidekicks will be undergoing some changes for the film.

The change to the casting comes after photos emerged this week of Rachel in full costume as the Disney princess.

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage recently weighed in on the debate during an interview on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast for reproducing the ‘f*****g backwards story’.

He said: “You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f*****g backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f**k are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

It has since been reported that the movie’s bosses will be opting for ‘magical creatures’ as Snow White’s companions, instead of casting people with dwarfism in the film, according to reports. However, it is not yet clear what form these substitute ‘creatures’ will inhabit.

The upcoming live-action movie, aptly named Snow White, will see West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler joining the cast as the title role.

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,” Disney said in a statement to TheWrap.

“We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

Tyla has contacted Disney for further clarification.

The change to the casting comes as Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage recently called out the media company whilst on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast for reproducing the ‘f*****g backwards story’ (Alamy).

The remake of the film, which is directed by Marc Webb, is currently in production and is set to see Gal Gadot (Death on the Nile) taking on the role of the Evil Queen.

Elsewhere, moviegoers will experience original music by La La Land’s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Snow White does not have an official release date, as of yet, although, the premiere is expected to come sometime in 2023. Watch this space!
