Dan Walker may have proved he was (somewhat) nimble-footed on the Strictly dancefloor, but he made a major misstep on BBC Breakfast this morning.

Co-hosting with Nina Warhurst, the journalist was discussing the latest Christmas Royal Mail updates, when a joke about chocolates took a wrong turn.

To test the efficacy of the Royal Mail during the busy Christmas period, reporter Ben Boulous decided to post an (empty) box of chocolates to the BBC Breakfast studios.

“Nina and Dan, I thought what better way than to wrap a little Christmas parcel from me to you,” Ben joked. “I had a look around my flat and I found a little box of chocolates and I've lovingly wrapped it.

"I say a box of chocolate its literally the box, the chocolates have been consumed already.”

Nina then responded: “Absolutely, I will definitely be hot-footing it in the office on Christmas Day in order to collect that empty box. Thank you, Ben.”

Getting involved with the banter, Dan added: “It keeps the weight down as well, knowing there's not any chocolate in it.”

While the pair both laugh, Nina jokingly asked: “What are you saying?”, which led to poor Dan having to backpedal quickly.

“No, not your weight!" he said, panicking, before trying to divert attention away from his comment.

“Get out, get out while you can! It's time now for the news, travel and the weather while I apologise profusely to Nina,” Dan joked.

Nina took the joke in good humour, but couldn’t help but tease Dan a little more, telling him it was “too late” for that.
